Quakers fall, Warriors win as EBC kicks off

CANTON — Salem opened the Eastern Buckeye Conference slate with a 50-31 road loss to Canton South on Friday.

The Quakers (0-3, 0-1) led by two after the first quarter before the Wildcats got going and did not look back.

Niko Walter led the Quakers with 12 points.

South won the jayvee game, 56-36. Brock Young had 11 points for the Quakers.

Salem is at Girard on Tuesday.

BELOIT–The West Branch boys basketball team took down Marlington 63-54 in an Eastern Buckeye Conference opener Friday.

Reese Leone paced the Warriors (2-0, 1-0) with 24 points. Brandon Zuchowski added 13 points, while Nick Everett scored 10 points and secured a team-high 12 rebounds.

Marlington falls to 0-2, 0-1.

The Dukes won the jv game 34-33.

West Branch hosts Campbell Tuesday.

HANOVERTON–The United boys basketball team fell behind early and could never catch up to Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference co-leader Toronto in a 69-59 loss Friday.

The Red Knights are now 2-0 in the EOAC, while the Eagles drop to 1-1 in conference play.

Nick Sninchak led Toronto with 26 points, half of which came in the first quarter when the Red Knights built a 22-8 lead. Nate Karaffa added 14 points.

For United, Alex Birtalan led the way with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Landon Baker had 11 points and eight rebounds. Parker Hydrick and Anthony DiBaggio each had nine points.

Toronto won the jv game 39-31. Steffen Jarrett led the Eagles with 10 points.

The Eagles are at Leetonia Tuesday.

WELLSVILLE — Wellsville earned its first win of the campaign by taking down Leetonia 69-48 on Friday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Derrick Suggs had 22 points and 13 boards for the winners, 1-2, 1-1.

Garrett Scott had 15 points and five assists. Luke Green had eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Brock Simpson led the Bears with nine points.

Wellsville is at Southern on Monday.

Leetonia won the two quarter jayvee game, 24-7.

SALINEVILLE–The Southern boys basketball team edged Columbiana 68-65 in overtime Friday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action.

The Indians are now 2-0 in the EOAC and share the top spot with Toronto. Columbiana falls to 1-1 in the EOAC.

Cam Grodhaus led the Indians with 23 points, with 11 of those coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Grodhaus also finished with 11 assists and four steals.

Nick May added 18 points for Southern. Jayce and Brad Sloan led the Indians’ rebounding effort with 11 and eight boards respectively.

Erik Hopfenziz led the Clippers with 13 points and seven rebounds. Hunter Zentner finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Sean Whitehead had 11 points and five rebounds.

Southern won the jv game 53-42 in overtime. Brady Tolson had 12 points for the Indians.

Southern hosts Wellsville Tuesday. Columbiana hosts Lisbon Tuesday.

BERLIN CENTER — Riley Miller had 15 points as well as four assists and the Western Reserve hit 12 threes but it wasn’t enough as Newton Falls rolled to a 63-51 win on Friday night.

Caleb Quinn added 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils.
