Clippers picking up the pace in the EOAC

COLUMBIANA — Matt Mazei scored seven of his game-high 21 points in the pivotal fourth quarter as Columbiana downed Southern Local, 46-43, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Friday.

Mazei also had 12 rebounds andnine blocks for the Clippers, who improve to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the EOAC. Southern moves to 7-4 and 5-4 EOAC.

The Clippers were trailing 37-35 after three quarters and outscored the Indians 11-6 in the final period.

Brock Smalley led Southern with 16 points, including four three-pointers in the first half.

Ryan Fahs contributed 12 points, while Hunter Zentner and Erik Hopfenziz each had six rebounds.

Columbiana also won the junior varsity game, 36-31, as Xathon Cross scored 11 points. Timmy West had 11 points for the Indians.

Both teams play Tuesday as Columbiana hosts Mineral Ridge and Southern entertains Crestview.

Waterloo 60, Springfield 49

NEW MIDDLETOWN — State-ranked Springfield suffered its first loss of the season, 60-49, to Waterloo in a key Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference encounter Friday.

Waterloo takes over sole possession of the league lead at 7-0, while Springfield drops to 6-1.

Caleb Francis scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Vikings (9-1). Vaughn Dorsey added 14 points and Max Adelman 13.

Waterloo used a 21-7 fourth-quarter run to rally from a 42-39 deficit at the end of the third quarter.

Drew Clark topped the Tigers with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Shane Eynon contributed 10 points. Evan Ohlin and Clay Medvec each had nine points.

Springfield (10-1), ranked 15th in the Division IV state poll, will host Jackson-Milton next Friday.

GREENFORD — South Range jumped out to a 26-13 halftime lead and rolled over Niles, 61-46, Friday.

Chris Brooks led the Raiders with 23 points, followed by Jaxon Anderson with 14 and Chris Brown 10.

Niles senior Cyler Kane-Johnson scored 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to become Niles’ all-time leading scorer. He has 1,344 career points, two more than his older brother, Cameron Kane-Johnson.

South Range also won the junior varsity game, 56-18.

The Raiders will play at Salem tonight.

SEBRING — Jordan Zupko scored 32 points in leading Mineral Ridge past Sebring, 76-75, Friday.

Sebring evens its mark at 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference.

Miles Culp added 14 points to the winnnig effort, while Dakota Ragazine and Austin Governor each had 10 points.

Gabe Lanzer totaled 27 points and 10 rebounds and Jake Hunter 23 points for the Trojans. Matt Byrd contributed nine points.

Mineral Ridge won the junior varsity game, 71-30.

Both teams play Tuesday as Sebring hosts Leetonia and Mineral Ridge travels to Columbiana.

LEETONIA — Wellsville’s boys basketball team didn’t miss a beat in a 62-47 win over Leetonia on Friday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Garrett Scott led the winners with 17 points and seven assists. Wellsville is 8-3 and 6-2. Justin Wright had 14 points and eight rebounds. Luke Green added 13 points and nine rebounds. Derrick Suggs had 12 rebounds.

Dylan Lennon had 14 points for the Bears, 2-11, 1-8.

Leetonia won the jayvee portion, 21-16. Luke Gregorino had six points for the Bears. Justin Thirtyacre scored 10 points for Wellsville

Leetonia is at Sebring on Tuesday. Wellsville hosts Southern on Friday.

BERLIN CENTER — Todd Henning had 15 points and Western Reserve’s five starters scored in double figures as the Blue Devils knocked off Jackson-Milton 55-44 on Friday in a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference game.

Noah Klasic added 14 points for the Blue Devils. Riley Miller, Preston Reed and Ryan Gordon had 12 points each.

Minerva moves to 2-9 and 2-4, while the Dukes are 5-6 and 3-3.

Cameron Bennett led the winners with 21 points.

Brice Williams had 22 points for the Lions.

Marlington won the jayvee portion, 66-64.

Lisbon is 5-8 and 3-6 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. East Palestine fell to 2-9, 2-6.

Lisbon led 45-20 after three quarters.

Ryan McCullough had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Blue Devils.

Jonathan Bertovich had 21 points for the Bulldogs.

Lisbon won the jayvee game, 35-27.

Kaden Crawford had seven points for the winners. Sean Helpy had seven points for the Bulldogs.

Lisbon hosts Columbiana on Friday.
