Narrow victory for Reserve

SEBRING — Western Reserve’s boys basketball team was on the ball with a 58-56 win over Sebring in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference play.

Riley Miller had 17 points for the winners, 3-10, 2-6. Todd Henning added 12 points.

For Sebring, Joey Clark and Gabe Lanzer had 18 points each. Zane Peterson had nine rebounds.

Sebring is 7-7 and 2-6.

Reserve won the jayvee game, 52-50.

Sebring hosts Jackson-Milton on Tuesday.

EAST PALESTINE — Toronto’s Nate Karaffa had 17 points as the Red Knights downed East Palestine 64-38 on Friday night in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Toronto, ranked fourth in the state in the Associated Press Div. IV poll, is 14-1 and 10-0 in the league. East Palestine fell to 2-10 and 2-7.

For Palestine, Dom Posey and John Bertovich had 11 points each.

Toronto won the jayvee game, 53-41.

LISBON — Lisbon lived on the edge as the Devils turned back Columbiana 55-54 in overtime on Friday.

For Lisbon, Justin Sweeney led the way with 21 points, while Logan Bell added 15 points and seven rebounds. Ryan McCullough had 10 rebounds and three assists.

Lisbon (6-8, 4-6) is at Toronto on Tuesday. Toronto can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win.

Erik Hopfenziz, Sean Whitehead and Matt Mazei had 13 points each for the Clippers, 8-7, 4-6. Mazei and Hunter Zentner had 10 rebounds each.

The jayvee game was played on Thursday due to the game being a boy-girl doubleheader.

Columbiana hosts Wellville on Tuesday.

NEW MIDDLETOWN — State-ranked Springfield jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back in a 65-32 win over Jackson-Milton in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference play Friday.

Drew Clark led the Tigers with a game-high 21 points. Evan Ohlin followed with 16 points, Beau Brungard nine and Clay Medvec eight.

The Tigers improve to 11-1 and will play at McDonald on Tuesday.

Jackson-Milton (2-10) got 14 points from Mason Robison.

ALLIANCE — West Branch suffered a 64-51 loss to Marlington on Friday.

The Warriors are 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference.

Marlington also won the junior varsity game, 41-33.

West Branch will host Minerva on Tuesday.

United 59, Leetonia 39

HANOVERTON– Landon Baker had 18 points and 16 rebounds and Parker Hydrick 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists in leading United over Leetonia, 59-39, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Friday.

The Eagles improve to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the EOAC, three games behind Toronto.

Hydrick scored nine points in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 14-5 lead. They widened the margin to 27-10 by halftime.

Keaton Baker added nine poitns and Alex Birtalan grabbed six rebounds.

Ethan Hartman scored led the Bears (2-13) with 17 points. Ian Davis contributed nine points.

United also won the junior varsity game, 51-49, behind Nate Miller’s 20 points.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday as United travels to Southern and Leetonia hosts East Palestine.

The Aviators improve to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference, while the Lions fall to 3-11 and 2-5 EBC.

Alliance also won the junior varsity game, 39-36.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday as Alliance hosts Salem and Minerva travels to West Branch.
