Warriors eliminate Quakers

BELOIT–The West Branch softball team knocked off rival Salem for the third time this season with a 3-1 victory in a Div. II sectional final Thursday.

The third-seeded Warriors improve to 24-3 overall and move on to play second-seeded Youngstown Ursuline in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Youngstown State softball complex. Salem drops to 14-9.

Salem went on top 1-0 in the top of the first before the Warriors answered back with all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Peyton Alazaus and Delaney Rito each went 2-for-3 for West Branch, with Alazaus doubling.

Sam Morris was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Destany Blake was 1-for-3.

Jordan Anderson pitched a complete game for West Branch with seven strikeouts and no walks.

For the Quakers, Bailee Thorn went 2-for-3. Taylor Thorpe struck out eight and walked one in the circle. Thorpe broke her own single-season record for strikeouts in a season with 201.

Elly Exline, Brooke Veglia and Meg Rossero all singled for the Quakers. Rossero extended her school record hitting streak to 19 games.

Salem still has regular season games on the schedule against East Palestine Saturday and Carrollton Wednesday.

Crestview 2, Ravenna Southeast 0

COLUMBIANA–Kaedyn Sutton pitched a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts as third-seeded Crestview knocked off sixth-seeded Ravenna Southeast 2-0 in a Div. III sectional opener Thursday at Crestview High School.

The Rebels (20-5) advance to take on second-seeded Waterloo in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday at South Range High School.

The Rebels gave Sutton all the runs she needed in the fourth inning.

Karsyn Moore led off with a single to left and stole second with two outs. Taylor Mellington (who finished with two hits) came up with the clutch RBI single to put the Rebels on top. Mellington moved to third on a single by McKenna Schultz and came home on an RBI single by Ashton Hughes.

Sutton scattered five hits and walked none on the way to her 14th win of the season.

Before their district semifinal next week, the Rebels host a regular-season game against Labrae at 5 p.m. today.

Newton Falls 10, Crestview 0

COLUMBIANA — Newton Falls took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and limited Crestview to four hits as the Tigers rolled to a 10-0 regular-season win Wednesday.

Olivia Koehrsen topped Newton Falls with three hits.

For the Rebels (19-5), Olivia Strank collected two hits, while Haley Eskra and Karsyn Moore had one apiece.
