Fishel leads Raider girls

GREENFORD — South Range didn’t have to go far to find a new girls varsity basketball head coach. Jeff Fishel, who has been the freshmen boys coach the last eight years, was hired by the South Range Board of Education on Monday.

He takes over for Tony Matisi, whose contract was not renewed in April after leading the Raiders to a record of 113-40 and three district titles in six seasons as head coach.

Fishel, a 1999 graduate of South Range, led the Raider boys to their winningest season with a 19-3 record as a senior, an Inter-County League title and the Raiders’ first district tournament appearance since 1985. A third-team Division III All-Ohioan, Fishel set school records for most points in a game (51) and career (898).

McCown played for 10 teams

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown was sometimes the starting quarterback, often the backup — and always among the most-respected and well-liked players in whatever locker room he was in.

And there were many.

McCown, who turns 40 on July 4, wrote in a piece for The Players’ Tribune posted Monday that he is retiring from playing football after an NFL career that spanned 16 NFL seasons and included stints with 10 teams, including the Cleveland Browns. He will be helping coach his two sons — also quarterbacks — in high school this year. McCown said he also plans to work as a TV football analyst in the future, and ESPN said later Monday it had hired him as an NFL analyst.

Michigan rides Henry’s 3-hitter

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jesse Franklin hit the second pitch of the game out of TD Ameritrade Park. With the performance Tommy Henry was about to give, that was all the offense Michigan needed.

Henry limited Florida State to three hits and Franklin’s homer stood up in a 2-0 win Monday night that put the Wolverines in control of Bracket 1 in their first appearance at the College World Series since 1984. The Wolverines (48-20) are 2-0 for the first time in six appearances since 1962 and need one more win Friday to reach the best-of-three finals next week.

“In the biggest game in Michigan baseball history in a long, long time, we got the best pitching performance in Tommy Henry’s career,” Michigan coach Erik Bakich said. “He was the entire story line tonight. He gave us something magical. I don’t know if there is an adjective to describe how good Tommy was, but he was better than that.”

5.2 million watch U.S. women

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Americans’ 3-0 win over Chile set a record for the most-watched group-stage Women’s World Cup match on U.S. English-language television.

Fox drew 5,324,000 viewers for Sunday’s game, topping 4,492,000 for the Americans’ 0-0 group-stage draw against Sweden in 2015. The game was the most-watched English-language soccer telecast in the country since last year’s men’s World Cup final.

In addition, Sunday’s match averaged 84,000 viewers online, the second-most streamed Women’s World Cup match.

The first two U.S. matches averaged 3,975,000, up 2 percent from 3,902,000 from four years ago.

The U.S. has advanced to the knockout stage and will finish group play on Thursday against Sweden.

NASCAR overturns victory

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR overturned a victory for the first time under its toughened new policy on cheating when Brett Moffitt was declared the winner of the Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway after Ross Chastain failed a post-race inpection.

Chastain led the final 141 laps of Sunday’s 200-lap race, but series managing director Brad Moran said the winning No. 44 was too low when it was measured with NASCAR’s height sticks.

“The height sticks have warning yellows in them and reds, and it was right off of all of them, so unfortunately it was extremely low,” Moran said.

Niece Motorsports tweeted after the race that it will appeal the decision.

NASCAR said the last time it disqualified an apparent race winner was April 17, 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis’ victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was thrown out because of an oversized fuel tank.

Reds outlast Astros

CINCINNATI (AP) — A storm delay left both starters struggling to regain their touch. Luis Castillo did better handling the challenge.

Castillo pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, Nick Senzel returned from an eye injury and drove in a pair of runs, and the Cincinnati Reds held on for a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday night.

The game was delayed 52 minutes in the bottom of the third inning because of a storm, and a double rainbow formed as the skies cleared. Both starters returned and wound up with season highs in walks.

Castillo (7-1) walked a career-high six but allowed only a pair of singles before leaving with two on and no outs in the seventh. Shortstop Jose Peraza’s throwing error let in a run in the seventh, and Michael Brantley doubled home another.

Porcello, Red Sox blank Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rick Porcello pitched seven shutout innings for Boston to outduel Minnesota ace Jose Berrios, and the Red Sox stretched their winning streak to a season-high six straight games with a 2-0 victory over the Twins on Monday night.

Porcello (5-6) allowed only four hits and one walk with eight strikeouts, just his third start out of 15 this season with seven or more innings completed.
