Athlete with ties to area may return to Olympics

Erika Kinsey has done enough to qualify for her second Olympics.

The wife of 2005 Beaver Local graduate and former University of Akron decathlete standout Daniel Kinsey recently cleared the high jump qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympic Games set for Tokyo.

Erika’s season best 6-feet, 5-inches came in back-to-back meets in the Netherlands and Norway on June 9 and 13. The height of 6-5 is the qualifying standard. The 31-year-old’s personal best is 6-5 1/2 set in 2015.

Erika, who represented Sweden in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, is currently ranked second in the world according to scoring totals by the International Association of Athletic Federations’ Diamond League. Her height of 6-5 is the sixth best in the Diamond League this season.

Erika has won two outdoor meets this season and placed second in two others. On Friday, she was fifth at a meet in Lausanne, Switzerland (6-3).

High jump for the 2020 Tokyo Games will be contested at the New National Stadium. The women’s qualifying round is Aug. 6, 2020 with the finals being held Aug. 8, 2020.

Erika was notified about a month before the 2016 Games by the Swedish Olympic Committee regarding her spot in those Olympics.

Dan and Erika currently reside in Akron. Erika trains there and in East Liverpool. She is also a volunteer jumping coach for the University of Akron.
