Radiologist joins SRMC staff

Charles Spirtos, M.D.

SALEM — Charles Spirtos, M.D., board certified radiologist, recently joined the staff of Salem Radiologists Inc., and is also a member of Salem Regional Medical Center’s (SRMC) medical staff.

A graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Dr. Spirtos earned his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University and his Medical Degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He then completed his radiology residency training at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, followed by a fellowship in combined Nuclear Medicine-PET/CT at Cleveland’s University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Prior to joining Salem Radiologists, Inc., Dr. Spirtos was a radiologist at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he served as the Chief of Nuclear Radiology.

Dr. Spirtos brings specialized training in nuclear radiology, an advanced imaging technique that uses small amounts of radioactive material to visualize how the body is functioning to help diagnose and treat diseases.

“Using leading-edge imaging technology such as PET/CT, I can perform a variety of procedures that evaluate changes in organ function, including the heart, kidneys, liver, thyroid, brain and lungs,” Dr. Spirtos said. “These studies help physicians detect and treat many conditions in their earliest stages, such as cancer, heart disease, thyroid problems, neurological disorders and other abnormalities.”

Dr. Spirtos joins Drs. Peter Apicella, Rex Jennings and Marcus Julius of Salem Radiologists Inc. as they perform world-class medical imaging at SRMC, utilizing the fastest 3D CT scanner, the highest-resolution 3-Tesla (3T) MRI, the widest-angled 3D Mammography, and the highest-definition ultrasound available.

Board certified in diagnostic radiology and nuclear radiology by the American Board of Radiology, Dr Spirtos’ professional memberships include the American Medical Association, American Board of Radiology, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, and Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor of radiology at NEOMED and a clinical assistant professor of radiology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Spirtos and his wife, Jeanine Awad-Spirtos, M.D., have strong family ties to other health care providers in the Mahoning Valley. Jeanine recently accepted a position as an emergency medicine physician at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital where her father, Dr. Mounir Awad, and sister, Dr. Marie Awad-Alexander, are general surgeons. Dr. Spirtos’ father, Dr. Ted Spirtos, is also an emergency medicine physician at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth and his brother, Dr. Lewis M. Spirtos, is a psychiatrist there.

“My wife and I are excited to return to this area to practice medicine and be near our family and friends,” he said.

Dr. Charles Spirtos has an office in SRMC’s medical imaging department. For more information call Salem Radiologists at 330-337-6140.
