Driver chased from Brunk’s to home in Austintown

Staff Reports

GOSHEN TWP. — An Austintown man has been charged with a felony after leading several police agencies on a chase from Goshen Township to his home on Turner Road early Friday morning.

Michael R. Hood, 19, 660 N. Turner Road, Austintown, was charged with failure to comply, a third-degree felony, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, operating a vehicle intoxicated and speeding after Goshen officer Ryan Connolly observed him speeding on state Route 45 at Brunk’s RV at 3:11 a.m. Friday. Hood failed to stop and continued north toward state Route 224.

A Mahoning County sheriff’s deputy assisted in the pursuit, which did not exceed 55 miles per hour. Hood continued past a roadblock of two cruisers in Ellsworth.

A Milton Township officer joined the pursuit which continued east on Mahoning Avenue. Hood drove over a spike strip at Lipkey Road, causing a flat tire, but still did not stop, driving with his hazard lights on.

An Austintown officer joined the pursuit until Hood pulled into his driveway. A female passenger exited the vehicle and was detained.

Hood pulled away from officers in an attempt to prevent being handcuffed before he was eventually subdued. A search of his vehicle uncovered a prescription medicine bottle filled with a leafy, green substance along with a vaporizer and two bottles of liquid vape. A pack of blunt wraps were also confiscated from Hood.

When questioned why he did not stop, Hood said he did not believe the officers were real officers and his attorney advised him to turn on his hazards and find a safe place to stop.

The pursuit covered 13.2 miles and 15 minutes.
