Leetonia forecast still in black 5 years out

LEETONIA — The Leetonia school board Thursday night approved a five-year financial forecast that shows a positive cash balance throughout.

According to the forecast submitted by school Treasurer Jennifer Coldsnow, the district will have a cash balance of just over $4.7 million this year and remain in the black throughout the next five years, finishing the final year at nearly $3.7 million.

The district does not experience deficit spending throughout the forecast, either, falling only slightly more than $400,000 from the $758,567 positive spending the first year to just under $350,00 positive spending in the final one.

The positive forecast in not just by chance, schools Superintendent Rob Mehno said. “This did not occur by accident, but is a result of everyone working together and focusing on the students and community,” he said. “We have an amazing, staff, school system and community.”

In other business, the board approved an increase in cafeteria prices for next year to remain within the state mandated guidelines. Each lunch will increase by 5 cents. The new prices will be $2.10 for elementary, $2.35 for middle school and $2.45 for high school.

Also at the meeting the board accepted $6,240 in donations from community members and organizations for the Destination Imagination eighth-grade team to travel to global competition at the University of Tennessee. The team, comprised of Haleigh Brock, Miya Dolan, Olivia Clark, Katie Soupal and Delaney Roller, is currently at the competition which runs through Sunday.

The board also accepted donations of $4,000 from the Leetonia Ruritan Club for scholarships, $2,000 from the Leetonia Eagles for its scholarship, $500 from the Leetonia Eagles for the track and field program, $200 from Richard and Marci Hendricks for the board scholarship, $250 from the Leetonia Ruritan Club for the food pantry and $250 in supplies from Spartan Fabrication Inc.

Additionally, Mehno reported at the Leetonia Scholarship Banquet last week, $55,241 of local scholarship money was awarded to Leetonia seniors. Students also received a total of $474,000 in university scholarships.

The district will graduate 66 seniors this afternoon.
