Career Center’s summer renovations nearly complete

LISBON –With less than a week to go before high school classes begin for another year at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, summer projects are wrapping up and board members were introduced to two newly hired instructors.

Superintendent Chuck Adkins said as a whole the renovation projects this summer have nearly been completed. There are some outdoor aluminum panels near the back entrance, which are custom and still about six weeks away. The driveway, which got torn up by the renovations is scheduled to be resealed on Friday.

Adkins said there are still some more wiring issues to complete, but overall instructors coming back into the buildings already have been pleased with the classrooms.

William Jones has been hired to teach science, replacing Jamie Stacy who changed to the veterinary science technology instructor. The board also were reintroducted to Matt Peters, who will now serve as the precision manufacturing machining instructor. In the past, Peters was at the CCCTC working with the Project Inspire Program through the Educational Service Center. For this year, precision manufacturing machining will share a space with welding, but Adkins said if the program grows the way they hope, they could be preparing a new space for it next summer.

There will be 280 incoming junior level students when the high school level starts next week and a total of 504 with the returning senior level students. This is reportedly 53 more than last year.

Numbers are also growing in the adult program. Adult Education Director Dr. Kelly Darney said 39 nursing students will graduate Aug. 31. However, 80 incoming nursing students are expected at an orientation event scheduled for tonight and there is a wait list and second date planned in case some of those expected do not come. Those adult students in nursing and other programs such as welding and pharmaceutical tech will start on Sept. 12.

Darney reported to the board the nursing audit review and the fire charter renewal both came back without any problems.

In other matters:

–The board voted to employ Brenda Pilarcik and Alicia Johnson as staff for the Coffee Shop for the upcoming school year at a rate of $13 per hour. Board members discussed the coffee shop, which does not open until the high school students leave for the day, but provides food for the many adult students who attend classes at the CCCTC in the evenings.

— The board voted to employ Eric Cranston as a classified substitute custodian for the upcoming year.

— The first day for high school juniors will be Aug. 21, while seniors will begin on Aug. 22.

— The next meeting of the board will be 7 p.m., Sept. 19.
