New Columbiana water plant up and running

COLUMBIANA — Water from the city’s brand new water plant should be flowing through the system and into residential homes in as little as two weeks.

City Manager Lance Willard said the plant is already treating water and the Environmental Protection Agency will be doing a walk through of the new plant soon.

The old plant will remain on standby during the 30-day start-up of the new plant, he added.

In other matters, he also announced that the city has been selected for more than $1.6 million in funding through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Small City Program.

The funding would go toward the East Park Avenue, Springfield Road and Heck Road reconstruction project in the coming years.

In a letter to the city announcing the funding, ODOT District 11 Program Manager Nichole Wade said that in the past ODOT has provided 80 percent of the eligible cost in federal funds through the Small City Program, but this year the program is utilizing the Toll Revenue Credit to provide 95 percent of the eligible costs up to a maximum of $1.6 million in federal funds through the program in fiscal year 2022.

Willard said the project has been supported by Gov. John Kasich, state Rep. Tim Ginter and Congressman Bill Johnson.

Meanwhile, ODOT is continuing to work on the state Routes 7 and 14 intersection, and he said the new waterline portion of the project should be in service next week.

He said the city has been working with ODOT as needed on that project.
