Port Authority gets job-training grant

LEETONIA — The Columbiana County Port Authority has been awarded a job-training grant for a Columbiana company that could also result in 50 new jobs.

Port Authority Director Penny Traina announced at Monday’s meeting the $200,000 state Regional Job Training Program grant will be used to help Compco Industries train its 300-plus employees and possibly create 50 more jobs.

Compco will also work with the county Career and Technical Center to develop related vocational training programs to serve up to 125 youths over the next two years and assist in job placement.

Compco is contributing $100,000 worth of curriculum development and training using existing staff, with the Sustainable Opportunity Development Center of Salem’s industrial training center assisting in development of the training curriculum. The training curriculum will be made available to other businesses through the SOD Center.

“This collaboration is the perfect example of how government, business and education is working together to promote job growth in Columbiana County,” Traina said.

A leading producer of tank heads, Compco also produces a wide range of metal stampings. Traina learned of Compco’s job-training needs while taking a 2017 tour of the facility at the request of Columbiana city councilman and former Compco official Rick Noel, with the port authority agreeing to apply for the grant on behalf of the company and to serve as grant administrator.
