Contract for new $2.3M bridge at Gretchen’s Lock awarded

LISBON — The bridge replacement project at Gretchen’s Lock is a go.

Columbiana County commissioners on Wednesday awarded the contract for the project to Marucci & Gaffney Excavating of Youngstown, which submitted the low bid of $2.27 million. County Engineer Bert Dawson took a week to review the bids before recommending commissioners award the contract to Marucci & Gaffney.

Dawson received $2.8 million in federal highway funds to replace the one-lane bridge on Sprucevale Road in the Gretchen’s Lock section of Beaver Creek State Park in St. Clair Township. The new bridge will be located 65 feet downstream from the current bridge, reducing the severity of curves on both approaches.

Some site preparation is expected to get underway this fall, but Dawson said construction will not begin until spring.

In other action at the meeting, commissioners accepted an annexation petition from a Perry Township woman and scheduled a required public hearing for Dec. 12. Karen Hauck-Losito owns a home and two acres at 1750 N. Lincoln Ave. and is seeking to have the parcel annexed into the city of Salem, which is immediately adjacent.
