Columbiana County jobless rate jumps in December

LISBON — Columbiana County’s unemployment rate increased in December, something it had in common with the other 87 Ohio counties.

The county’s jobless rate was 5.4 percent last month, an 0.8 percent increase over November, according to figures released Wednesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The state unemployment remained unchanged for the third consecutive month at 4.6 percent, while the national rate increased slightly, from 3.7 percent in November to 3.9 percent last month.

The number of county residents collecting unemployment benefits jumped by 56 percent, from 1,450 in November to 2,275 last month, with the average weekly benefit payment being $362. The estimated number of county residents with jobs fell by 500 in December to 44,100.

Among adjoining counties, the county’s jobless rate was lower than Mahoning (6.3 percent), Carroll (5.5 percent) and Jefferson (6.4 percent) but higher than Stark (5.2 percent).
