Columbiana bakery vying for one sweet award

COLUMBIANA — With the city hopeful it can be named Nicest Place in America by Reader’s Digest, another contest is under way for Das Dutch Haus Restaurant and Bakery, which is hoping to be named Sweetest Bakery in America in a separate contest.

Voting for the Reader’s Digest contest ended on July 21, and City Manager Lance Willard said a winner will be announced in about two months. He said the city received the most votes and most comments by the end of the voting period.

As for the bakery contest, Das Dutch Haus General Manager Zachary Orville said voting for the contest sponsored by Dawn Food Products began on July 1 and will run through Sept. 30.

The bakery has not yet placed high in preliminary voting, but Orville is optimistic that can change in the coming months.

“We are hoping our community and our customers get behind us and vote and see what happens toward the end of September,” he said.

Voting can be done online at https://sweetestbakeryinamerica.com

The restaurant and bakery got its start in Columbiana in 1982, with the bakery featuring a variety of sweets, including 40 different variations of homemade fruit and cream pies, homemade icing, cookies, wedding cakes, graduation and anniversary cakes, donuts, and more.

“We kind of do everything everyone else does, if not better,” he said.

The bakery goes through more than 2,500 pounds of sugar each month and some of the treats the bakery is most known for include cream stick donuts, coffee cake, German chocolate cake and icing, coconut cream and Dutch apple pies, buttercream icing, cinnamon rolls, and more, Orville added.

“One experience at the bakery will surely convince anyone and everyone that we truly are the sweetest,” he said.

Right now the top three contestants in the state are Honey Bee Bakery in Medina, Jack Frost Donuts in Cleveland, and Little Devil Cupcakery in Amherst.

The top bakery contestant in the nation is currently Jen’s Sweet Treats of Cudahy, Wis.
