Fairfield has designs on filling new board

COLUMBIANA — Fairfield Township trustees are going to begin looking for a person to join the newly formed architectural design and review board.

Zoning inspector Adam Booth said Thursday the board could consider Bob Durbin of the county engineers office, for one position and perhaps another person from the zoning commission. But Booth does not recommend adding someone from the board of zoning appeals, which will be the board that will hear any appeals on decisions made by the architectural design and review board.

The third person he suggested must come from the unincorporated part of the township. Anyone interested in joining the new board should contact Booth.

Booth further spoke of some of the actions taken recently by the board of zoning appeals.

The board approved the building of an accessory structure by Robert Ohler at a property along state Route 7, which will be farther toward the front of the property than the home.

However, the board did not approve a request by someone to build a home and towing garage on the same property near the intersection of Metz and Camelot Roads.

The board also approved allowing Zarbana, an aluminum extrusion company, to have only 20 more parking spaces added with their planned 150,000 square foot expansion. A height variance was granted as well, allowing the building where the work is being done to exceed the allowable height by four or five feet.

Booth reported he has Jon Vollnogle of Howells and Baird going over the plans for the expansion just to make certain nothing has been missed.

In other matters:

— Trustees discussed how much work the roads department had to do due to the recent clean up from the rains on July 7 and July 11. Melvin Miller, roads supervisor, thanked members of the board of trustees for stepping in and helping the road crew in his absence during those two dates.

Trustees further approved to have Yankee Clipper provide line striping and symbols for Crestview, Lower Elkton, Kirk and Old 14 Roads. The price is not to exceed $11,000.

— Two women announced they have filed to run for the fiscal officer position in November — Emily Wilms and Sharon Henry. A resident of Kirk Road, Henry asked the trustees for advice in getting the gas company to consider making natural gas available to the growing number of homes along her road.

— While trustees had spoken at a recent meeting about putting up a siren to warn residents about bad weather, Trustee John Garwood reported he recently learned from the EMA about a wireless emergency alert system. This would allow trustees to send out voice and text robo calls to known numbers in the township to provide warnings and is free for them to use.

— Trustee Bob Hum said he also is looking into a program, which would allow the township to upgrade their lights to be more energy efficient in township buildings.
