Trustees approve school resource officer for West Branch schools
Township trustees this week approved a two-year contract to provide a school resource officer for the West Branch school district.
Trustees approved a two-year contract effective Sept. 1, 2019 through Aug. 31, 2021 for the Goshen Police District to provide a school resource officer to the school district buildings in Mahoning County, including the middle and high school campus in Beloit and the elementary in Damascus. The annual cost of the contract is $20,000, paid quarterly.
Police Chief Steve McDaniel said terms of the agreement remain the same as the previous one.
The current school resource officer is Patrolman Anthony Pilolli.
The trustees also accepted the resignation of police officer Ryan Connolly and hired Niko Pacifico of Mercer, Pa., as a police officer.
Additionally, McDaniel reported most of the department’s policies have been certified by the state, with the last one for records retention still waiting for trustees approval before it can be certified by the state.
McDaniel said getting the policies certified has been in the works for a while, spearheaded by Lt. John Calko.
“[Calko]’s put in a lot of hard work,” he said. “It took a while, but it’s definitely (worth it).”
Also at the meeting, Shawn Mesler of the Damascus Fire Department reported on behalf of Fire Chief Derek Day that residents are reminded to call for the fire department when there is a fire instead of attempting to extinguish the fire themselves.
Mesler also said the department is at 18 members and in need of additional volunteers for the roster. Anyone interested in serving on the department should call Day at 330-853-4418.
The next regular trustees meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the administration building.
