Eagle Scout praised for cemetery rehab

WASHINGTONVILLE — Mayor Herman Frank praised an Eagle Scout for his work in refurbishing the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in town.

Justin McLemore, a 16-year-old student at Springfield High School, recently renovated the cemetery on the north side of town as his Eagle Scout project and hosted a dedication ceremony Sept. 7. The project included 27 new headstones with more than 50 reset; two signs, one with the cemetery’s history and one with a list of the veterans buried at the cemetery, including those from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War; and a flagpole.

The project also included extensive research on the veterans buried at the cemetery and the cemetery itself.

Frank said he hopes to work with McLemore to secure some of the history for the village to preserve.

“It was a very nice service/memorial,” Frank said during the village council meeting Monday night. “There was a lot of research of history that was really very interesting.”

Frank said he will contact McLemore to see if the village can obtain a copy of the history the Eagle Scout presented at the dedication service.

Frank attended the service with Fiscal Officer Dale Davis and Council President Ron Stevens.

In other business, council approved up to $1,500 for four new tires and alignment for a water and sewer department truck. Utilities Superintendent Brian Gudat said he has not priced the work yet, but the tires will be purchased under state pricing.

Council also approved up to $500 for the rental of an auger plus materials to install posts around a fire hydrant in front of the Maplewood Marketplace on West Main Street, which has been getting struck by vehicles.

Also at the meeting, Councilman Al Vignon reported there is a hole of approximately 2 to 3 feet in depth along the roadway on County Line Road south of the VFW. He said the hole has worked its way into the sidewalk and will likely begin working its way into the roadway. He said the culverts inside the hole are separated and need to be sealed before being covered.

Additionally, Gudat reported the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) has completed its asset management review of the water and sewer department and is asking to present it to council, which should take approximately an hour. Council agreed to host the presentation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. immediately followed by a village council meeting on Oct. 7 or 21, depending on the schedule of the RCAP representative, at the administration building.
