Good Samaritans praised for aiding bridge jumper

LISBON — Good Samaritans are being praised for assisting a 42-year-old Leetonia woman who jumped from an overpass bridge onto state Route 11 Monday afternoon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbiana Fire and EMS responded after receiving reports a woman had jumped from the state Route 344 bridge onto the highway below in Fairfield Township.

When the first troopers arrived, good Samaritans were already providing aid to the injured woman and providing traffic control blocking the highway to protect her from passing vehicles, according to a release by the patrol.

The woman’s injuries are reported to be non-life threatening and she was transported by EMS to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Traffic was diverted for a short time, up the exit ramp and back down the entrance ramp to state Route 11, to avoid the scene and give troopers time to investigate the incident. All the lanes were later reopened. The matter is under investigation.

Troopers note they would like to thank those who quickly helped at the scene.
