Leetonia to seek grant for water lines

LEETONIA — Village Council Wednesday night authorized Village Administrator Gary Phillips to apply for funding for a possible water line project.

Phillips will apply for Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) funds to install three block-long water lines between Chestnut and Walnut streets. The funding would be a 0 percent interest loan.

In other business, council approved an internship agreement with the Operator Training Committee of Ohio through Oct. 16, 2021. The organization provides the intern at no cost to the village and the training is for Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) operator certification for water, wastewater and water lab.

Additionally, Phillips reported the utilities department is down a certified lab employee and he needs to review applications. He said it is not a new position, just replacing an employee.

Phillips also reported the utilities department is currently flushing fire hydrants on the village south side. He warned residents they may experience low water pressure and some discoloration.

Mayor Kevin Siembida announced the village’s Christmas light up ceremony will be held Dec. 1 on Main Street downtown. Council agreed to close the street from 4 to 9 p.m..

Trick or Treat is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
