Palestine earns seat on state advisory board

EAST PALESTINE– Only 30 superintendents in Ohio are invited to sit on the State Superintendent’s Advisory Committee to stay informed and involved with decisions at the state level.

East Palestine Superintendent Chris Neifer said he has been asked to sit on the committee at Monday’s board of education meeting.

“This is a great opportunity for us as a district,” Neifer said. “It is really important that we are in the know and involved with the activities at the state level.”

Neifer said he was very excited to receive the invitation, and when he asked why he was selected at the first meeting, the committee told him it was because of the work the district has done.

The administrative team was invited to a leadership session last June, which was the primary place where the district displayed its work.

“We didn’t get picked out of a hat randomly,” Neifer said. “Of 612 districts in the state, we were one of 30 to be asked to sit at the table this year. We are very pleased about that.”

Neifer said he will be reporting the results of the meetings every couple of months to keep the district informed on what’s happening at the state level.

In other business, the board approved:

— Bailey Davis as the student liaison to the board for the 2019-2020 school year.

— Shari Hays as a full time first grade teacher.

— Mary Beth DiCello as high school secretary.

— Laura Boyer as elementary secretary.

— Logan Gatchel as high school softball coach.

— Aaron Walker as assistant high school baseball coach.

— Melinda Crist as a substitute aide.

— Doug Walker as a high school baseball volunteer.

— The Mahoning Valley Regional Council of Governments Services Agreement.

— The resolution wishing to participate and authorize the Southwestern Ohio Educational Purchasing Council to advertise and receive bids on the boards’ behalf as per the specifications submitted for the cooperative purchase of one school bus.

The next meeting is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 4.
