CCBDD approves spending

LISBON — The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities approved spending some big dollars at Wednesday’s meeting.

The board unanimously approved the resolution to pay this year’s non-medical share of the Medicaid match for the clients they serve in the amount of $3.99 million.

Additionally, the board approved $106,505 for the purchase of a new bus from Truck and Sales Services Inc. Superintendent Bill Devon explained the board purchases the bus and then the private company operating the workshop, Employment Development Inc., uses the buses charging the CCBDD $30 per route.

Devon said the EDI would like smaller buses, but that would mean eight routes instead of four routes, which would cost the CCBDD twice as much per day. In response to the questions of board members, Devon said while the buses are not full, the smaller buses allow for only two wheelchair slots and most of the routes require room for three or four wheelchairs.

The board also approved $32,400 to purchase 72-inch touchscreen computers that students can use interactively in the classrooms at Robert Bycroft. Another expenditure the board approved was $26,088 plus less than $5,000 in additional money, all to cover the costs of upgrading the phone systems. John Wolf, building and grounds manager, said the system is no longer being supported as is, but upgrading it is more economical than the $100,000 they believed they would need to spend to change the system entirely. The upgrade will include needed security features.

Finally, the board approved $6,841 for Boardmaker Online District software, which provides educational curriculum for disability students and allows the teachers to collaborate their daily plans.

In other matters:

— The board honored Kenny Channels for 31 years of service, mostly as a Workshop II employee; and Kathy Davidson, 30 years, mostly as a bus driver.

— The annual strategic plan will be available for viewing in the board offices from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 26.

— The board approved giving part-time employees holidays for New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, plus all part-time employees will receive two Christmas leave days.
