Hay barn destroyed by fire in Hanover Twp.

DUNGANNON — A metal barn used to store 750 round bales of hay caught fire Sunday afternoon.

The fire was at the Todd Hoppel farm off Gavers Road and began about 1:30 p.m., according to Frank Baker, assistant chief of the Hanover Township Fire Department. No livestock was kept in the steel structure.

Baker said they were assisted by firefighters from the Lisbon, Franklin Township, Highlandtown, Winona, West Point and Salineville fire departments in preventing the fire from spreading to nearby feed.

Family members were reportedly outside working when the fire started, but the cause remains undetermined. The state fire marshal’s office was contacted to assist in the investigation.

The smoldering bales continued to reignite throughout the rest of the day and into the night, and Baker said they did not return to station until 1:30 a.m. Monday.
