Special Ed program at EP schools wins top state ranking

EAST PALESTINE– The district received a meets requirements rating for its special education program it was reported at this week’s board of education meeting.

The Ohio Department of Education calculates the rating by using the final data submitted through the Education Management Information System. The combination of data results in one of four possible ratings, and meets requirements was the highest possible rating.

“I’m very proud to say that the district’s special education rating is meets requirements,” Superintendent Chris Neifer said. “The staff does a lot of hard work to make sure we’re doing the right things within the needs of our students. The fact that we met that says a lot.”

In other business, after a generous donation from Dave and Dena Goedhart, City Council publicly thanked the couple for impacting the accounts of more than 125 students in grades K-12, who had negative lunch balances.

The board also approved and recognized the establishment of an indoor track program for the high school. The season would start after Christmas break, take place in January and February and consist of four meets taking place at the WATTS Center. The outdoor coaches have volunteered to help the indoor team for no additional pay.

“Last year our track meets did well in terms of generating revenue,” Neifer said. “I think giving our kids an additional two months of training is certainly worth it.”

The board also approved:

— The renewal of Abi Miller as resident educator program coordinator.

— Marci English as part-time title one tutor for the middle school.

— Lara Buelow as transportation aide.
