Salem man indicted for leaving kids home alone for days

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a Salem man on two counts of child endangering.

Hiram Diaz, 53, of Calla Road, Salem, is indicted on the counts of felony child endangering after police said he left his two children, ages 13 and 5, home alone for days.

Goshen Township police became aware of the situation after a school counselor contacted them in March, saying the 13-year-old was unable to get into his home because he had locked himself out while putting his little brother on the school bus.

The older boy said he took a taxi to school March 8 because his parents had gone to Philadelphia for a few days.
