Man dies in Columbiana car-train collision

COLUMBIANA –A 36-year-old man from the Columbiana area has died after a vehicle and a train collided in Columbiana early Sunday morning.

Columbiana police say the driver of a Ford Fusion was struck by a train and killed at the Elm Street crossing about 1:30 a.m.

Columbiana police released this statement:

“The identity of the driver is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of close family. CPD were assisted on scene by Columbiana Fire, EMS, County Coroner’s Office and Norfolk Southern officials.”

Police Chief Tim Gladis said he expects to release the name of the victim today and hopes to know more by then.

“We really don’t know how he ended up in the middle of the tracks at the particular moment,” he said.

Amtrak also released a statement, saying:

“There were no reported injuries to the passengers or train crew. The train was delayed approximately three hours while local authorities investigated.”
