New Circle K, Dollar General planned in city

SALEM

A new Circle K with gas tanks and a new Dollar General are in the works for the city of Salem, according to Planning & Zoning Officer Chip Hank.

Plans for both structures have been submitted to Hank, with the new Circle K expected to be built at the northwest corner of North Cunningham and East State Street and Dollar General expected to be built on Legacy Lane off of North Ellsworth Avenue.

He couldn’t give a timetable for either project, but according to an email from the project manager for American Trademark Construction Services, the general contractor for the new Circle K, the tentative start date is soon, pending on the closing for the property.

Hank was first contacted in October 2018 by a sitework contractor regarding the Circle K. Since then, the plans were submitted and reviewed and a permit issued. The drawings show entrances off of East State Street and North Cunningham Road, with a canopy over five pump areas.

The Circle K location at 1125 E. State St. is being advertised for sale, but remains open. The gas tanks were removed last year after an underground gasoline leak caused issues for a house next door. Mac’s Convenience Stores, doing business as Circle K, ended up buying the house from the young family that was displaced. Other Circle K locations in the Salem area include the one on West State Street and one on South Lincoln Avenue that includes a Subway inside.

The property at North Cunningham Avenue and East State Street formerly housed a small shed business, which recently moved up the street near Sleepy Hollow Sleep Shop, also on East State.

Hank said site plans are currently being reviewed by Howells & Baird for the tentative Dollar General. Plans were submitted to Hank in December, showing an entrance off of Legacy Lane for the property at the southeast corner of Legacy Lane and North Ellsworth Avenue.

New Dollar Generals are popping up all over the area, with newer locations on West State Street, on Pidgeon Road (state Route 45), on U.S. Route 62 just outside Damascus and on state Route 14 just outside Washingtonville. There’s also a location at the Salem Plaza, and stores in Lisbon and Columbiana.

Hank had received confirmation last month that a lease was signed for Chipotle to be constructed at the southeast corner of East State Street and Southeast Boulevard where the former Shell True North gas station had been located. The gas station closed over a year ago and the gas tanks were removed. Tentative plans call for a late fall opening for Chipotle.

Quaker Steak & Lube is coming also, at the Timberlanes Complex with the entrance off of Penn Avenue, and an opening expected soon.
