Junior Fair set Aug. 6-9
LISBON — The Columbiana County Agricultural Society on Wednesday set the dates for this year’s junior fair.
After a discussion began with an emergency meeting on June 10, the county fair board decided to rescind its complete cancellation of the 2020 county fair at last week’s meeting. Instead, in an 11-4 vote, the board was in favor of approving a modified junior fair with market projects only, harness racing and camping.
After Gov. Mike DeWine relaxed some of the guidelines, the board decided it would be possible to hold the junior fair, but President John C. Wolf admitted that it would take a group effort to make it happen.
“If we’re going to do this, we need all hands on deck,” Wolf said at last week’s meeting.
Wednesday, the board met to figure out the details of the junior fair.
After some discussion, the board decided to approve the schedule that the junior fair committee proposed. The junior fair will be held Aug. 6-9, and the board decided to not charge admission. Since there is no charge for admission, there are no official hours.
While the board is still ironing out the details, shows will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 7. The auction will take place all day on Aug. 8, and it will be simulcast broadcast.
The board is still considering a few vendors to place by the barns, and a member of the dairy boosters, Lana Lowmiller, said that they would open up their milkshake barn.
Camping will be available for the whole week, and secretary Michelle Crawford said that she expects most campers to be those who attend the junior fair.
“We’re just trying to make it the best experience possible for everyone, so they can come out of this with some good memories,” Crawford said. “We want to be able to give the kids some time to be with their friends. That was one of the big things they’ve been missing out on.”
In other news, the royal 4-H court was postponed until next year, since the participants wouldn’t be able to have the full experience.
The fair board will meet again at 7 p.m. July 1 and will begin meeting on a weekly basis leading up to the junior fair.
