Contract extension for Leetonia teachers OK’d

LEETONIA– The Leetonia school board Tuesday night approved a one-year extension on its agreement with the teachers union.

The board approved the one-year agreement with the Leetonia Education Association effective Aug. 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021. Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham described it as a roll-over of the current contract with a 2 percent increase in base salaries.

Dunham praised the cooperation between the board and union, which has been negotiating for the past month.

“[Both] fully recognize the balance of fair wages and budget constraints,” he said. “I believe the relationship between the board and association has been outstanding over the years and it is extremely important right now that we have an agreement in place considering the uncertainty ahead.”

Dunham noted the agreement ensures that the teachers and other certificated staff members will be available to students and parents regardless of the COVID pandemic’s effect on the upcoming school year.

In other business, the board granted one-year limited contracts to Robert Beam as head athletic director and Matt Manley Jr. as assistant athletic director for the 2020-2021 school year.

Dunham said having the two-tier model for the position brings the strengths of both individuals and provides a good opportunity for the athletic department to move forward.

In response to questions from the board, Dunham said the two-tier model will take the job description of the previous athletic director and combine it with additional duties. He said both employees will be brought together with a council of coaches and the building principal to determine the specific needs of the department. He also noted the two employees can cover for each other and at least one will be available during the school day.

The board also granted a one-year limited contract to Frederic Mindreau as a global language (Spanish) teacher; approved Emily Shar, Jianna Herhold and Luke Nappi as volunteer band summer staff; and granted supplemental contracts to Michelle Long for robotics (2019-2020), Rose Barkett for junior high cheer, Anthony Fuller for assistant varsity football, Nate Bodnar for assistant varsity football, Nick Hulea for assistant varsity football, Michelle Long for robotics, Amy Gibson for public relations and John McIlduff for junior high fall game manager.

Additionally, the board accepted the retirement of JoAnn Morris as a cook, the resignation of Victoria Francioni as choir director.
