Driver escapes injury in wreck avoiding ATV

Staff Reports

WINONA –A 42-year-old Salem motorist was uninjured after he wrecked to avoid striking an oncoming ATV and then had to escape from his SUV after it caught fire.

The accident occurred on King Road in Butler Township at 2:26 p.m. Saturday. According to the state highway patrol, Harold M. Court had just crested a hill when he saw an ATV being driven by a child coming toward him. He swerved to avoid a collision and went off the left side of the road, with his Equinox overturning. The SUV then caught fire and Court, who was wearing a seat belt, managed to escape by kicking out the windshield.

The ATV continued on its way. Firefighters were the first on the scene and saw ATV tracks on the side of the road, but by the time the trooper arrived the tracks had been obliterated by fire hoses being dragged and personnel doing their jobs.

The ATV was only described as red. Nearby residents told the trooper nearly everyone in the neighborhood has ATVs and rides them, but none of them could identify this one in particular.
