United students will have options on restart

HANOVERTON – The United school board this week addressed the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Lance Hostetler said the district will begin the school year on a hybrid schedule of in-person instruction and remote learning. Parents also have the option of enrolling their children in the district’s online school, The Eagle’s Nest. He said the hybrid schedule will prepare students for remote learning at a later date if needed.

Hostetler also noted face coverings will be required in situations where social distancing cannot be practiced, such as in the hallways, on buses and shoulder-to-shoulder activities.

There is a Restart Discussion link on the district website that includes informational documents and a Frequently Asked Questions list with answers for parents.

Also at the meeting, the board approved a substitute category for each classification of substitutes for the 2020-2021 school year due to the pandemic. Substitutes will agree to substitute only within the United Local School District and the district will agree to hire the substitutes for four or five typical days per week at $110 per day for up to six substitutes.

The board also approved a memorandum of understanding with the United Education Association establishing compensation guideline for the fall supplemental contracts. The MOU provides a quarter of compensation at signing, a quarter after the first practice and a quarter at half of the season for athletics and half the job responsibilities for non-athletics. The final quarter will be earned at the completion of the season or job responsibilities.
