Leetonia council officially approves street paving project loan

LEETONIA — The village officially has its loan for a street paving program.

Village council this week approved the second reading of a resolution accepting a $425,000 loan from the county port authority for five years at 2 percent interest. Council approved the resolution as an emergency so that it will take effect immediately.

The street resurfacing project will be done in phases. The first includes the following seven streets: Madison, Hazel, Bears Den, Sleepy Hollow, Waddell, Pearl and Honey Lane. This will be done through the county engineer’s office. The second phase consists of East High and Somer streets, which will include more extensive curb work and storm sewer improvements.

Council will repay the loan using proceeds from its share of the state gas tax and license plate fees.

Also at the meeting, council agreed to place Phase II of the project out to bid. Council also if there is any money left over from coming under the estimate, the money will be used for Butcher Road, with Councilman Jim Pittman voting no.

Council recognized that Phase II may extend into next year. Phase I began in August.

In other business, council rehired David Hardesty to the EMS department. He had previously served on the department, but moved away and recently returned.

Council also agreed to hold Trick or Treat from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, but asked residents to be mindful of current pandemic and social requirements.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at village hall.
