Leetonia voters asked to support levy renewal

LEETONIA — District residents are being reminded to vote Nov. 3.

At the school board meeting Tuesday night, Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham reminded residents they are being asked to decide on the renewal of a 4.16-mill levy for general operations for five years. The levy generates approximately $350,000 annually and is the only one on the books.

Dunham emphasized that renewal of the levy will not increase taxes.

In other business, the board approved as substitute teachers for the second nine weeks at a rate of $100 per day Amy Gibson, Fred Bruderly, Alexa Bruderly, Matt Burns, Artie Altomare, Wendy Meek, Marilyn Heddleson (three days) and Matt Manley (part time). The substitutes will be paid with grant funds and are not eligible for medical benefits. They will be on-site every day every day in case a teacher gets sick during the day during the pandemic, as deemed necessary by the superintendent.

The board also granted supplemental contracts for 2020-2021 to Amy Gibson for yearbook advisor, Molly Coffee for National Honor Society, Randy Rodik and Leisa Lorch for sophomore class advisors and Benjamin Johnson-Bowers for seventh/eighth grade girls basketball coach; and approved as game workers for the 2020-2021 school year Gannon Shepard, Jaedon Finley, Dylan Lennon, Peyton Durbin, Landry Baker and Ashten Houlette.

Additionally, the board approved a resolution in support of Ohio Senate Bill 358, which prohibits EdChoice vouchers, making it possible for students to attend private schools, and provides relief for pandemic costs, according to Dunham; appointed schools Treasurer Jennifer Coldsnow as designee for public records training; and accepted donations of $500 from the Leetonia Area Sports Association (LASA) for the football supplemental fund, $400 from LASA for the high school student council fund, $200 from Humtown Products for the stadium project fund and $50 from Dave Hosack for unpaid student lunch accounts.

Also at the meeting, Dunham announced committees as follows: Christina Bulford and Dan Votaw to policy & guidelines, Larry Duko and Votaw to academic, Michael Henderson and Richard Hendricks to building & grounds, Henderson and Duko to insurance, Hendricks and Bulford to athletic and Duko to career and technical center.

Additionally, Ryan O’Donnell, school community liaison, reported the district is currently at 13 percent chronic absenteeism, which is measured as missing 10 percent of instructional days according to the Ohio Department of Education. He said the district had a goal of 20 percent entering the school year and have been working to improve the rate by offering students meals, special assemblies and awards as incentives for attending school.
