SALEM — A Tuesday morning fire at an apartment complex on the south side of town has left several residents without a home.

The fire department responded to the building at 565 Franklin Ave. shortly after 6 a.m. and remained on scene until noon. The building contained six apartments, three or four of which were occupied, according to Fire Chief Scott Mason.

All occupants, including one pet, escaped without injury. The Red Cross and Salvation Army assisted at the scene.

Mason said three of the apartments are total losses, and the other three will likely also be determined as total losses. The property owner had no insurance and none of the residents had renter’s insurance, he said.

The fire is under investigation, but Mason said it is not suspicious at this time. He said the cause is undetermined and will likely remain so due to the amount of damage to the structure.
