United to continue hybrid learning for now

HANOVERTON — The United Local School District will reserve one day each week for remote learning at least through February.

Schools Superintendent Lance Hostetler told the school board Wednesday night the district will have remote learning each Wednesday of any week that includes five days of in-person instruction. Weeks that have less than five days due to holidays or snow days early in the week will not include the one day of remote learning, he said.

The district returned from the holiday break Jan. 4 on a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person instruction due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hostetler noted no other Columbiana County district returned to in-person instruction that early, so there is no comparisons to make regarding community spread of virus among students and staff.

Hostetler said reserving one day each week for remote learning will keep students and staff prepared in case the district has to return to all remote learning due to the pandemic. He said it also allows for Zoom meeting with faculty and staff for professional development, especially regarding a return to normalcy.

Letters will be sent out to parents and the information has been posted on the district’s website and Facebook page.

In other business, the board accepted the retirement of Peggy Mix effective May 31 and resignation of Angela VonFeldt effective Jan. 18; approved an agreement with Kent State University for College Credit Plus; and granted supplemental contracts for the 2020-2021 school year to Sarah Jones for fall junior high cheerleading and Tyler Leitza for junior high wrestling.

The board also accepted donations of $287 miscellaneous to National Honor Society for a drive in movie night fundraiser, $89 from miscellaneous to the Key Club for a pumpkin painting fundraiser, $1,000 from a national “FACTS” grant to FCCLA, $100 from Mr. and Mrs. Randy Baker to the football fundraiser for shirts, $900 from Sean Weyant to the football fundraiser, $200 from Eichler Auto to the girls basketball team for game ball sponsor, $185.65 from Donors Choose awarded to Emily McIntosh to purchase a Nearpod license to be used for students in her classroom and $3,915 plus food and other items from various individuals and companies to the United Community Outreach program to help families in need over the holiday.

Treasurer Melissa Baker also praised the board members, noting they have been willing to step up and help with whatever is asked of them.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 10.
