WEST POINT — Two people were found dead in a Madison Township trailer home after a fire broke out Tuesday evening.

West Point Fire Chief Wayne Chamberlain said firefighters were called by a neighbor at 8:33 p.m. and were able to quickly arrive at the home at 44100 Y and O Road. The flames were swiftly doused leaving damage to the living room and kitchen.

A man, identified as 59-year-old Jeffrey Allen Dawson, and a woman whose identity is not being released pending notification of family, were both found dead in the bedroom area. One dog did not survive, but another, a white husky, escaped the home and was seen by firefighters and investigators working in the area. A cat was given oxygen at the scene and released to a neighbor.

While fighting the fire a gas can inside the home exploded near a firefighter, but no one working at the scene was injured, according to Chamberlain. The efforts were aided by a fire hydrant right outside the home, which is located in a trailer park and owned by KAM Trailer Park LLC.

Sheriff Brian McLaughlin said detectives from the county sheriff’s office responded and it appeared the residents were operating a generator as there was no electricity at the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The sheriff’s office, the state fire marshal’s office and the county coroner’s office responded to the scene and are involved in the investigation. Brandi Phillips of the coroner’s office said their office was continuing to work into the evening Wednesday on the case.

Firefighters from Madison Township and Glenmoor fought the fire, while Lisbon firefighters were on stand-by. West Point firefighters returned to the fire station at 11:11 p.m.
