Council moves housing inspectors to health dept.

City council approved more legislation Tuesday related to moving the housing inspection division out of city hall and into the city Health Department.

The approval just changed some wording to show two separate positions under Environmental Health, one for Director of Environmental Health/Sanitarian and one for Director of Housing/Housing Inspector.

Council had already approved creating a full-time position for housing, along with moving a part-time housing inspector position so both are under the health department’s jurisdiction.

The city currently has one part-time housing inspector. Another part-time inspector retired last year.

Plans call for the hiring of a full-time Director of Housing/Housing Inspector so there will be one full-time inspector and one part-time inspector.

In other business, Councilman Dennis Plegge announced a Parks Committee meeting is set for 5 p.m. March 9 in city council chambers, with social distancing and mask wearing required. The topic will be the parks department applying for a NatureWorks grant to change over lighting at Centennial Park to LED and also the Bee City USA designation being sought.

Councilwoman Cyndi Baronzzi Dickey said she’ll be scheduling a meeting of the Rules and Ordinances Committee in the near future to again discuss trash collection rules. The committee had talked about the topic previously, with members asked to review the existing ordinance, see how other communities handle it and talk to trash haulers. Some of the discussion had been about the hours trash can be picked up. The time and date for the meeting will be announced.

During the comments portion of the meeting, Councilman Sal Salvino said good job by the Columbiana County Drug Task Force in dismantling a meth lab in Salem last week. He said that’s sending a strong message that “drugs will not have a place in our county and our city.”

The next council meeting is set for March 16. To attend, use Zoom Meeting ID: 971 1995 6722 and Passcode: 820114, or the link at https://zoom.us/j/97119956722?pwd=WHlETzlUODVMWjVDZC9lcXFCSDN6UT09.
