Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a registered non-profit organization is seeking sponsors throughout Columbiana County to help build beds for children who do not have them.

“It’s just something that once you do it and you see it, you can’t get away from it, it just draws you in,” Junior Harr, chapter co-president, said.

The SHP Columbiana chapter started October 2020 and has built 41 beds. SHP consists of 250 chapters throughout the nation.

Melanie Harr, Columbiana SHP public relations, said she hadn’t realized how many children in Columbiana County did not have beds.

June 12 is the largest event Columbiana SHP is hoping to gain support for. SHP will be at the Salem Plaza at 10 a.m.; the event is nationwide with a goal to build up to 80 beds. Currently the Columbiana chapter has enough sponsors to build 18 beds.

SHP will bring all the equipment to the event.

“We have two saws, two drill presses, 25 sanders eight drills, eight impacts dipping tanks and tables …” said Junior Harr

People are invited to help build, no registration is required. Show up, sign in and start building a good night for a child.

Junior Harr explained that once the chapter has everything set up volunteers start cutting, drilling, sanding, put everything together, stain the wood like an assembly line.

Another public bed build is taking place at 1 p.m. April 25 at Adele’s, 509 Snyder Road, Salem.

The Columbiana chapter of SHP has a waiting list of 30 kids.

“Our goal is to have the whole county covered so there are no kids sleeping on the floor in Columbiana County,” said Junior Harr

The goal of the chapter is to create a fairly quick process getting the kids a bed. Mattresses also create a holdup, Junior Harr explained. Rent to Own has been a main supplier of mattresses.

Sponsors currently supporting the Columbiana branch of SHP include St. Jude Catholic Church, Italo’s of Lisbon, Serious Carpet Cleaners, Ray Lewis, The Lavender Barn, United Methodist of Lisbon and Almost Perfect.

Lisbon is also allowing SHP to participate at the craft show between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. this Saturday where SHP will have a bed on display and will take donations.

Companies can also supply meals for build events.

Cindi Smith, SHP member, noticed that there are drives for food and clothes but she had never known of a drive for beds.

Donations can be made online and through the mail at P.O. Box 12, Lisbon, Ohio 44432.

Anyone who wants to donate can also find the link on Facebook @SHPColumbiana.

“There’s times at many builds that I just stand back in the corner with tears rolling down my eyes, knowing what everyone is working for,” Smith pointed out

If a company wants to have to have their own bed build, each bed costs $200 and the chapter does have a 10 bed minimum. The chapter said they can come on site with equipment and supplies.
