New SHS Alumni Association scholarships reflect generosity of families

ETHAN BLAIR YERKEY

The Salem High School Alumni Association has two new scholarships available for students pursuing postsecondary education.

Through the generosity of two local families wishing to memorialize their children, there is one new scholarship for the postsecondary level and one for the high school level.

Both are available to be applied for during the 2022 scholarship application period along with numerous other named and academic merit scholarships. They are currently listed online at www.salemohioalumni.org.

Matthew Yerkey ’82, DDS, and his wife Wanda have philanthropically funded the E. Blair Yerkey Memorial Ohio State University Scholarship in memory of their son, Ethan Blair, who passed away in 2005 from a seizure disorder at the age of 21 months.

The scholarship is designated for a Salem High School graduate who currently attends The Ohio State University. Applicants need to describe how they live with or have overcome a life challenge. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2022, the year that Blair would have graduated from Salem High School.

ELIZABETH ‘LIZZIE’ DEMING LOWRY

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Deming Lowry was a 2005 graduate of Salem High School and a 2009 graduate of Ohio University’s Scripps School of Journalism. A kind and compassionate young woman, she believed that selflessly helping others was an integral part of a meaningful life.

She passed away in October 2020 at the age of 34. Generously funded by the W. Robert Lowry family, the Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lowry Memorial Compassion Scholarship recognizes the quality of compassion in a graduating student.

One or two graduating high school students may be selected annually for their good works in helping others. Applicants will need to have demonstrated acts of compassion during their high school experiences or in special activities either inside or outside the traditional high school environment.

The process for applying online is convenient and user friendly. Students are invited to explore the different scholarships and then register on the Student Application Portal.

Salem High School Alumni Association scholarship applications require online submission of information specific for each scholarship for which students wish to apply. Deadline for high school and postsecondary applications is Monday, March 21, 2022. Scholarships will be awarded at the SHS Scholarship Ceremony on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in the Salem High School auditorium.

Since 1908, the Salem High School Alumni Association has been providing scholarships to help students pursue their career aspirations through the generosity of alumni and friends.

In 2021 the Salem High School Alumni Association awarded 96 scholarships totaling $375,250 to 88 Salem High School graduating students and alumni. Since 1908, more than $8.3 million has been given to 2,,456 recipients.
