Note leads to SL evacuation

SALINEVILLE — A note written on a girls’ bathroom wall Wednesday morning led to an evacuation of the Southern Local Schools.

The threat of a shooting came only a day after the shooting in a Texas elementary school killed 19 students and two adults.

Superintendent Tom Cunningham said despite the major interruption of the day and the concern the threat caused, the school’s staff, students and parents, many of whom were there for a senior awards assembly, were excellent in how they handled the situation. “As bad of a day as it was, everyone was safe, nothing was found in the school and we were able to bring everyone back to class,” Cunningham said.

Sheriff Brian McLaughlin said deputies responded immediately to the school after learning about the threat. The students were evacuated and the school was searched for weapons. State Route 39 was blocked off by the fire departments to keep anyone from entering the school.

After nothing was located, both McLaughlin and Cunningham said several sheriff’s investigators and administrators began checking all the relevant video footage at the school and following up on what was found, as they look for the student or students responsible.
