Derailment in Columbiana

COLUMBIANA — A Youngstown and Southeastern train derailed in Columbiana on Friday morning. According to Columbiana Police, three of 11 cars on the train came off track along Fitzpatrick Street, blocking the E. Friend crossing, just before 11:45 a.m. The train was traveling northbound. All cars were empty and no injuries were reported.

The crew stopped the train and uncoupled the three derailed cars. The rest of the train resumed northbound at 1 p.m. Work continues to remove the remaining cars and portions of E. Friend and Fitzpatrick Streets are expected to remain closed for hours.

It is unclear what caused the cars to derail and the incident remains under investigation.

The Youngstown & Southeastern Railroad (YSR) is operated by Midwest & Bluegrass Rail which purchased the shortline in 2020 from Indiana Boxcar Corporation. YSR maintains 40-miles of track located between Youngstown and Pittsburgh. Connections are made with the Norfolk Southern in Youngstown and with CSX Transportation in Lowellville.

YSR main and largest customer is PennOhio Waste, which uses the railway to haul hoppers full of construction and demolition debris to its Negley landfill. Most of the line east of Negley is used for car storage.
