Bernie Moreno, GOP rally for votes in Hanoverton
HANOVERTON — Republican Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno accompanied by Sen. Tim Scott (R), South Carolina, were greeted with cheers and chants of “Bernie, Bernie, Bernie” when they arrived Wednesday morning at the Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton for a rally to encourage attendees to vote and get their friends to vote for an all-Republican sweep in the 2024 General Election to be held Nov. 5.
This is Moreno’s second attempt at winning a senate seat. He dropped out of the 2022 election to Sen. Rob Portman, and he now faces a tight race against Incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D). Libertarian Donald Kissick is also running for the same Senate seat.
Moreno told the crowd of approximately 150 people that he needs to win the election for the Republican Party to take control of the Senate.
Early voting was an emphasized by Moreno, Scott, State Rep. and Incumbent Monica Robb Blasdel, 79th district, who also asked for support for herself, Sen. Incumbent Al Cutrona and other Republican officials and candidates present at the rally.
Columbiana County Republican Party Chairman David Johnson said that voters need to encourage their neighbors and friends to do everything they can to get out and vote. He noted the key to the Republicans winning the election would be voter turnout and large turnouts in counties like Columbiana would be needed to overcome the larger urban areas like Cleveland and Akron where Democrats have a strong presence.
Moreno also crusaded for former president and presidential candidate Donald Trump (R), vice presidential candidate JD Vance (R), the Republican Supreme Court Justice and a “no” vote on Issue One, which will determine who will handle the redistricting in Ohio.
Moreno told the crowd of people gathered at the rally that they would get to fire Brown and then he would go to Washington DC, get an Uber, drive to the Capitol and fire Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and then have Scott replace Brown as the chairman of the Banking Insurance Committee which he says is one of the most powerful committees in Congress.
Moreno and Scott and other republicans present heavily criticized the majority of the Democratic party throughout the rally.
Scott said without a 51st Republican senator, which would be Moreno if he wins, there won’t the ability to close the borders or reverse Bidenomics and Moreno needs to be the 51st Republican senator. Scott also encouraged those present to get their neighbors, friends and families to the polls to vote.
Scott told the crowd if Moreno does not become the 51st Republican senator, the first vote the senate, which would be Democrat majority, would pass would be the filibuster, a tactic used to delay or stop a vote on an issue, and then the country would have 52 states with Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. He was met with boos from the crowd on that. He also said the Supreme Court would have 15 members because the Democrats would pack the court.
Moreno told the audience that he needed all of them to have a plan when they left the rally — to get out and vote.
“This is the most consequential election of our lifetime. When these little guys are older you will be talking to them about Nov. 5, 2024,” Moreno said, pointing out children in the audience. “That’s the day this country decided it is going to restore itself to our constitutional principles.”
Moreno related a story about a visit he made to a charter school for underprivileged kids in Columbus and one of the students said That’s Bernie Moreno. Moreno laughed and said they advertise too much. He went on to say another kid raised his hand and said you’re running for the United States Senate and another kid said you’re running against Sherrod Brown. Then he said another kid, a 6-year-old told him he was going to win, and he asked the boy why he thought he would win. According to Moreno, the little boy said to him “because Sherrod Brown is just too liberal for Ohio.”
Toward the end of his speech, Moreno said that as of Monday, Brown was ahead by approximately 10 points.
Following the speeches, Moreno took a couple of minutes to talk with the press. Moreno told the press, “If you’re an ordinary America here in Ohio, things are bad, it’s hard. If you’re a young person you can’t afford a house, you can’t afford a car, can’t afford to have kids, and this is the stuff we have to fix.” He also said that Brown was all talk and no action, and his campaign is entirely fake.
Moreno also said that it’s a tight race that is going to come down to turn out.
“Please go vote, please go vote one or the other. Even if you don’t want to vote for me or President Trump, get your voice out there and be heard,” Moreno said. “This is the one thing that makes America unique, is that billionaire or someone down on his luck has the same number of votes. Make your vote count.”
Moreno then went on to have a meet and great and selfies with audience members, before heading into the Spread Eagle Tavern for a private lunch.
