COLUMBIANA — A vehicle vs. train crash Friday morning killed a Salem man.

According to a press release from the Columbiana Police department, the crash at the Pittsburgh Street railroad crossing was reported by Norfolk Southern at 5:54 a.m. Friday, and officers were on scene minutes later at 5:58 a.m.

Officers found the vehicle had been struck by an Amtrak train and come to rest just east of the crossing. The driver Nickolas Thompson, 45, of Salem was pronounced dead on scene by the Columbiana County Coroner’s Office.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the railroad crossing gates were down and that Thompson went around them when his vehicle was struck by the eastbound train. The investigation is currently ongoing, and the release indicates a report will be made available when the investigation is completed.

The release also noted that Norfolk Southern crews were working to repair the crossing, and that Pittsburgh Street would remain closed at the crossing until further notice.
