Stats show decrease in Perry Township police calls in 2024
PERRY TOWNSHIP — The Perry Township Police Department received less calls in 2024.
According to the department’s year end activity report, the department responded to 1,164 calls in 2024, a slight decrease from 1,212 calls in 2023. The majority of the department’s calls continued to be in the township’s southwest sector this year with 348 calls, an increase from 322 last year. Calls to the township’s northwest sector were the second most frequent with 273 calls (302 in 2023); followed by the southeast sector with 244 calls (255 in 2023); and the northeast sector with 178 calls (176 in 2023). Calls inside the city of Salem were 61 (69 in 2023), Salem Acres had 41 calls (77 in 2023), and calls outside Perry Township totaled 19 (11 in 2023).
Traffic crash reports also decreased in 2024 with a total of 86, 27 less than the 113 crashes reported in 2023. Crashes in 2024 included (with last year’s count in parentheses): 25 (20) accidents with injuries, 44 (53) without injuries, eight (34) private property accidents, and nine (six) hit and skips.
While crash reports and overall calls decreased in 2024, the number of citations issued by the department increased from 419 in 2023 to 519 in 2024. The most commonly issued citation in 2024 was speeding with 218 citations, an increase from the 204 citations issued in 2023. Other citations in 2024 included (with last year’s count in parentheses): 68 (52) traffic accident citations; 42 (19) driving under suspensions; 13 (40) driver license violations; 72 (35) registration violations; 12 (13) operating a vehicle intoxicated; and 94 (56) traffic control violations.
