Perry Township trustees approve fire department expenses

PERRY TOWNSHIP — The board of trustees approved expenses for the fire department in its meeting Monday.

Trustees voted unanimously to approve repairs to the department’s grass truck by AgRevolution LLC for $780, and to approve attendance for six firefighters to attend a first responder seminar May 31, at a cost of $40 per person, for a total of $240 for all six.

Trustees also discussed the department’s potential paving projects for 2025 and annual salt order through the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Trustee Tony Ieropoli said that trustees would need to decide soon if the township will be moving forward with chip and seal for the year so that the necessary stone could be ordered, noting that the cost was two to three dollars cheaper per ton this year. Ieropoli said that if the township moves forward with chip and seal this year that the paving list would be West Perry Street, Liberty Street, Jones Drive, Hartley Avenue, Andrew Avenue, Elrond Avenue, and Overlook Drive. Ieropoli also said that he was waiting for a response from Green Township on the potential joint Pine Lake Road paving project, but that the quote had been submitted, and estimated the cost for both Pine Lake and chip and seal would be approximately $125,000.

Fiscal Officer John Volio said trustees needed to decide how much salt to order for next year as the order is due in the beginning of April and requires a resolution authorizing the purchase. Ieropoli said that he would check to see how much salt the township has stockpiled so the trustees could make sure they ordered the correct amount and approved the order in their next meeting.

“With the amount of salt used this year I’m sure prices are probably going to be high, so this is not the year we want to overstock on salt, we want to keep it more minimal,” said Board of Trustees Chair Steve Bailey.

During his report, Bailey said that the police department’s new cruiser is “up and running,” and was just waiting for the computer to be installed, and that the old cruiser has been cleaned out and had the department lettering removed, and Chief Richard Kimble is working to get it posted for auction.

“Hopefully that will be on there in the next week or two,” said Bailey.

Bailey also said that the department is currently still short one full-time officer, and that Kimble would be meeting with potential candidates and potentially visiting the Columbiana County Career Technical Center to fill the department’s fifth and final full-time position.

“He is actively looking, working on trying to get at least one more police officer, but things are going pretty good as it is,” said Bailey.

During his report, Ieropoli said that the township’s annual street sweeping was set for April 21, weather permitting.

The board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. March 24.

Starting at $2.99/week.
