New Waterford council close to decision about placing road levy on Nov. 4 ballot

NEW WATERFORD — Village Council is expected to make a decision in July on putting a road levy before voters.

Council has considered the matter the last several meetings and most recently received figures for how much an additional 2-mill road levy would cost taxpayers.

The five-year levy would be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot this year, if council approves.

According to the estimates provided by the Columbiana County Auditors Office, the levy would cost the owner of a $50,000 home $35 a year–an increase of $10.44 compared to the existing levy–and the owner of a $100,000 home $70 a year in taxes, an increase of $20.89 compared to the existing one.

The levy would generate $34,400 a year to be put toward the construction, reconstruction, resurfacing and repair of streets, roads and bridges.

It would replace the existing 1.4-mill road levy that expires in 2026 and generates roughly $25,000 a year for the road department.

Mayor Shane Patrone has said the current levy generally doesn’t cover the entire cost of the necessary road resurfacing in the village.

The village is responsible for the maintenance of seven miles of roads. Patrone has said the new levy could cover the cost of equipment used to repair and surface roads, including salting and plowing.

In other matters at the most recent council meeting, council also approved allowing Patrone and the fiscal officer to arrange for financing for new extrication equipment for the fire department.

Patrone said the equipment is estimated at $54,000 and will replace the old equipment that is no longer operational.

Starting at $2.99/week.
