Nutrition topic for Ostomy Support Group

AUSTINTOWN – Elaine Pearce, a clinical dietitian at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, will address nutrition for individuals living with ostomies during the March 10 meeting of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group.

WEST POINT – The West Point Nazarene Church will serve an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.

Breakfast buffet planned at Masons

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.

Free dinner set at First Brethren Church

NORTH GEORGETOWN – A free dinner will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the First Brethren Church, 27333 Main St. The menu offers ranch chicken, potatoes, vegetable, beverage and dessert. Donations are accepted but not necessary.

‘Egg-stravaganza’ breakfast offered Saturday

HANOVERTON – The United Community Scholarship Foundation will hold its annual all-you-can-eat “egg-stravaganza” breakfast and silent auction from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the high school. Omelets include a choice of ham, cheese, onion, mushrooms and green peppers. Also made right on the spot are homemade fruit crepes and doughnuts. Hot and cold beverages are also included.

Pork chops featured at Banquet in Salem

Columbiana Library offers mobile media

COLUMBIANA – The Columbiana Public Library patrons have mobile and online access to thousands of movies, TV shows, audiobooks and music albums for free. This new service is provided through a partnership with Hoopla Digital. Patrons can access this service by downloading the free Hoopla app or visit hoopladigital.com.

Titles from major Hollywood studios, record companies and publishers are available for instant streaming or temporary downloading to smart phones, tablets and computers. All content is available to every patron with no holds or waiting for the item to be returned. Items are automatically returned at the end of the borrowing period so there are never any late fees.

Southern Local alumni invited to play

SALINEVILLE – All Southern Local alumni are invited to participate in an alumni basketball game on March 20. All proceeds will be donated to Southern Local Elementary/K105’s “Quest for a Million Pennies” which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A 30 and over game will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m., followed by an under 30 game. Alumni cheerleaders are also invited to participate. There is a $10 entry fee and all basketball and cheerleading participants will receive a T-shirt. Interested alumni must register and pay by March 9. Tickets on sale for United musical

HANOVERTON – Tickets are on sale in the United High School office for the production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” to be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 6 and 7 and 2:30 p.m. March 8 in the high school auditorium. This classic musical that takes place in the Oregon Territory in 1850 is high energy featuring exciting music and dance. Cost is $9 for adults and $7 for students and senior citizens.

Cub Scout Pack 40 holds Pinewood Derby

COLUMBIANA – Cub Scout Pack 40 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Feb. 22 at the East Fairfield Methodist Church. Wild game dinner set in Deerfield

Lupus group plans monthly call-in session

The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter, will host its monthly call-in support group from 7 to 8 p.m. March 11. Call 888-NO-LUPUS to register and receive the call-in information. Leetonia Library to join reading club

LEETONIA- The Leetonia Community Public Library is participating in Scrappy’s Reading Club beginning in March and running through the end of April. The goal of the program will be for each participating student to read a minimum of five books from the library during the months of March and April. The child will write the names of the five books read on the bookmark. Upon completing the goal, a parent or library staff person will sign off on the bookmark. With each completed bookmark, the child will be rewarded two free general admission tickets to one of the five predetermined Scrappers games. At each of the games, the students that complete Scrappy’s Reading Club will be recognized on the field for their accomplishments.

Scrappy’s Reading Club’s goal focus is to get children in grade kindegarten through eight excited about reading and to encourage participation in reading regularly outside of the classroom. At the end of April, if 50 books are read, Scrappy will be a special guest at the library’s Summer Reading Fun kickoff in June.

Alliance Habitat seeks young professionals

ALLIANCE – The Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHFH) will hold an informational session discussing the formation of an Alliance Area Habitat Young Professionals (HYP) group. The meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 11 in the East Room of the University of Mount Union campus center. Young professionals are invited to learn more about the AAHFH in general and specifically find out how they can help launch a HYP group in Alliance.

HYP is a young professional’s organization open to people ages 21-40 that work or live in Alliance. HYP supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity. The group would have its own board officers and members, but would work in partnership with the AAHFH in planning fundraisers, networking opportunities, and special events. Group plans to celebrate

National FFA week in Lisbon

LISBON – The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center Future Farmers of America (FFA) in Lisbon will celebrate National FFA Week, Feb. 21-28. This year’s theme is Go All Out! and it embraces more than 80 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future.

Designated as National FFA Week in 1947, the week of George Washington’s birthday is FFA Week, and runs from Saturday to Saturday. FFA Week gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture. During the week, chapters conduct a variety of activities to help others in their school and community learn about FFA and agricultural education.

The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center FFA will celebrate National FFA Week by hosting an FFA spirit week including dressing in different apparel that lines up with the daily themes during the week, dressing in blue and gold on Friday which are the official colors of the FFA, passing out candy to the students at the school during lunch periods with messages encouraging students to join and participate in FFA functions and activities, and hosting a corn hole tournament. Today’s FFA members are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. Through agricultural and hands-on learning, they are preparing for more than 300 career opportunities in the food, fiber and natural resources industry.

National FFA Week is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

Ball State student to perform on piano at Copeland Oaks

SEBRING- Carson Weingart, a senior at Ball State University, will present a piano recital at 1 p.m. Saturday in Murphy Auditorium at Copeland Oaks. The program is open to the public at no charge.

The recital will feature the works of Beethoven, Bach, Liszt, Brahams, Martin and Gartner. Additionally Weingart will be joined by his sister Valerie Weingart, a vocal major at Ball State University who will perform a selection of classical and operatic works accompanied by her brother.

Carson Weingart, 23, has presented a recital at Copeland Oaks every year since he was 10 years old. He is in his final year at Ball State where he is a double major in piano performance and business. He earned the ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada, while he was in high school. During his time at Ball State, he has won numerous piano competitions and awards including first place in the MTNA Young Artists Piano Competition for the State of Indiana in 2013 and first place in the Indiana Hoosier Piano Competition in 2014.

‘Barefoot’ auditions postponed

LISBON – Due to inclement weather, Stage Left Players has postponed auditions for “Barefoot in the Park” until 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Trinity Playhouse, 234 E. Lincoln Way.

Director Bill Finley seeks a cast of two females and four males. Auditioners will read from the script and bring their personal calendars to note conflicts on the audition form. Shows begin at 7 p.m. April 17, 18, 24 and 25 and 2 p.m. April 26.

Earth Day Environmental conference set

EAST LIVERPOOL – Kent State East Liverpool is preparing for its 13th annual Earth Day Environmental Justice Conference on April 25. Organizers are now accepting papers, posters and online presentations related to environmental justice issues from all students, including area high school students.

This year’s event will honor the late Dr. Roxanne Burns, who was a biology professor on the East Liverpool campus and who helped organize the first Earth Day event here in 2002.

Prizes will be awarded for submissions in six categories: science-based essays that synthesize research and sources based on evidence; social science essays based on environmental justice research and literature; personal essays citing research and personal experience or a fully personal essay; humanities/academic essays synthesizing literature, history, etc.; MP4 video presentations on environmental justice; or posters/-tri-fold posters with accompanied citations.

Essays are due by April 6 and must be uploaded to a link found at col.kent.edu. MP4 videos and an intent-to-submit form for posters must be uploaded by April 17. Posters are due and to be set up the day of the conference.

The day-long conference will feature guest speakers, student presentations and information focused on local environmental justice issues. Buckeye Dairy Boosters offer scholarship

SALEM -Applications are being accepted for the 2015 Columbiana County Buckeye Dairy Booster $1,000 Scholarship.

Applicants must be a member of a Columbiana County family whose primary occupation is directly involved in the dairy industry. Students must prove enrollment, or submit a letter of admission, to a two or four-year institution of higher learning or graduate school. Those applying are not required to limit their educational choice to an agricultural related field. Student must be considered a full-time student and maintain at least a B or 3.0 grade point average. Previous scholarship recipients may not reapply.

Autism service providers invited to event

BOARDMAN -The Autism Society of Ohio-Mahoning Valley is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21 at the Southern Park Mall.

Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and organizations in the area.

CAA taking winter heat aid applications

LISBON – The Community Action Agency of Columbiana County will take applications for the Emergency Heap/Winter Crisis Program through March 31 at the Lisbon office, 7860 Lincole Place (rear). Appointments may be made by calling the automated scheduling system at 330-424-1386. Limited walk-ins are taken on Monday-Thursday and walk-ins on Friday with a sign in at 7:30 a.m. daily.

The Winter Crisis Program provides assistance to low-income households that have had utilities disconnected, face a utility shutoff, or heat with bulk fuel and have a tank that is 25 percent or less of its capacity. Assistance is provided to eligible households once during the 2014-15 season. Household income eligibility is based on the previous 90 days or 12 months gross income (before taxes) at 175 percent Federal Poverty Guidelines, which must be provided. Clients applying for Pipp Plus guidelines are 150 percent or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Households with a member who is classified as permanently and totally disabled must provide proof at the time of the interview.

Alliance Domestic Shelter seeks volunteers

ALLIANCE -The Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter is seeking volunteers and will offer a training class from 6 to 8 p.m. March 19 at Alliance Community Hospital’s conference room 1-A. Reservations are requested by contacting the shelter at 330-823-7223 or aadvs @neo.rr.com.

“Our volunteers have been key to helping us serve the community for over three decades,” said Executive Director Kim Stanley. The training session will be led by Education Services Coordinator Taryn Miller and Director of Development Chris Cugini. The session will cover an overview of domestic violence, the cycle of violence, code of conduct and other shelter procedures. Those interested in helping must be 18 years or older with no criminal background.

Habitat ReStore plans recycling drive

SALEM -The Habitat for Humanity ReStore Northern Columbiana County (HFHNCC) at 1965 N. Ellsworth Ave. is holding an electronics recycling drive from 5 to 8 p.m. March 10. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The ReStore will accept televisions, computers, printers, telephones, scanners and all other electronics during this three-hour event. All items will be recycled for free except for projection, console and floor model TV’s, for which there is a $5 fee.

The ReStore will also accept latex paint for recycling, with a $1 fee per can. (Latex paint is accepted year-round for $2 per can).

There will be a “repurposing your garden” display which will include repurposed ReStore items to be used for garden art or planting as well as other ideas for gardening. Customers will be able to shop the ReStore’s spring merchandise for the first time this spring, as well as enter their name in drawings to win ReStore gift cards, handmade arrangements, etc.

Scott Craven, HFHNCC construction manager, will demonstrate tips and tricks on how to use the paint supplies sold in the ReStore and how to give homes a fresh coat of paint this spring.

The ReStore is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays. All donations made to the ReStore are tax-deductible. Community Center hosting swim clinic

SALEM – The Salem Community Center is hosting an adult swim clinic from April 21 through May 26. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturdays.

This clinic will offer participants a better understanding of the four competitive swim strokes and prepare them for the Red, White and Blue Swim Classic held at the center on May 30.

Damascus students to show new wall

BELOIT – First-grade students at Damascus Elementary in the West Branch School District will climb the newly installed Transverse Walls to demonstrate what they know about the attributes of 2D shapes. The school’s Partners in Education group donated $4,700 for the purchase and installation of the wall. The unveiling of the wall begins at 9:40 a.m. Thursday with a math and physical education lesson. The lesson will focus on physical well-being and math. Groups of four students will analyze the wall filled with shape magnets and determine whether to sort the shapes into two or three groups based upon the defining attributes of the shapes.

‘Meet the coach’ dinner planned

LISBON The “Meet the Coach” pasta dinner and Chinese auction will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 3 in the cafeteria at Beaver Local High School. The new baseball coach is Beaver Local alumni, Mike Agnew. Pasta and homemade sauce and meatballs will be served with salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Hospital to sponsor 2 blood drives

SALEM – According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in America needs blood. Recipients include accident victims, cancer patients, organ and bone marrow transplant patients, individuals undergoing open heart surgery and premature infants. Lunch program on identity theft set

EAST PALESTINE – East Palestine’s Centenary United Methodist Church and Salem Regional Medical Center are partnering to help local senior citizens avoid identity theft, fraud and scams.

Local seniors are invited to attend a special “lunch and learn” program from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 40 S. Market St. A free lunch will be served followed by an informative presentation by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office on the latest scams targeting seniors, identity theft, fraud and ways seniors can protect themselves from these threats.

Lifeguard training class planned in March

SALEM – The Salem Community Center is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course from March 16-27. Classes will run weeknights from 5 to 8. Event to focus on women’s heart health

ALLIANCE – In honor of American Heart Month, Alliance Community Hospital and the American Heart Association are collaborating for the second year to help Alliance go red for women’s heart health.

“Alliance Goes Red: Empowering Heart Smart Women in Our Community” is an evening designed to empower the community, especially women, with the knowledge and tools they need to make positive lifestyle changes to help reduce their risk of heart disease.

Health at Home workshop planned

The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. Litter prevention scholarship offered

YOUNGSTOWN – The Ohio Association of Litter Prevention and Recycling Professionals (OALPRP) is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student from Ohio. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must: Plan to enroll or currently be enrolled at an accredited Ohio college, university or technical school; Have declared or plan to declare a major relating to environmental sciences or environmental education; Reside in an OALPRP member city/county. The Mahoning County Solid Waste District (Green Team) is a member.

Harvest for Hunger kickoff planned

YOUNGSTOWN – The 24th annual Harvest for Hunger kickoff begins at 10:30 a.m. at Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road. Harvest for Hunger is a food and funds drive that takes place in March and April to help stock the food bank’s shelves for the spring and summer months when donations taper off.

Eastern Gateway alumni offer bricks

STEUBENVILLE – Eastern Gateway Community College’s Alumni Association is selling commemorative bricks to raise money for the Alumni Scholarship Fund.

The decorative bricks, priced at $50 each, will be placed in the courtyard on the Jefferson County campus. They can be personalized with the name and year of a student’s graduation or a special message in honor or memory of a specific individual. Each engraved brick will accommodate three lines of up to 15 characters each, which includes spaces, numbers, letters and punctuation.

“This is a great way for our students and alumni to celebrate their accomplishments or acknowledge the influence someone has had on their life,” said Amanda Coburn, secretary to the foundation and alumni. “All of the proceeds will benefit our scholarship fund, so it’s a great way to help others pursue an education and find direction in their working lives.”

Kindergarten screening set

SEBRING – Kindergarten screening for all children who will be 5 by Sept. 30 and resides within the Sebring School District will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 17 and 8 a.m. to noon March 18 at B. L. Miller School, 506 W. Virginia Ave. Ohio Revised Code 3313.673 specifies that all first time kindergarten students must be screened.

Non-residents planning to apply for open enrollment, which will be available at screening, will need to schedule an appointment. Parents are required to bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security card, proof of residency and custody papers, if applicable. Diabetes education offered

POLAND – Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will offer diabetes education Feb. 17-19 at Hospice House and at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

The three-day course runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, and from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the diabetes classroom at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave., Youngstown.

Healthcare professionals who teach the course, which is certified by the American Diabetes Association, focus on the medical aspects of the disease such as medications, glucose monitoring, exercise and complications during the first session. The second and third sessions focus on learning to plan meals, count carbohydrates, interpret food labels and make positive food choices.

“These classes provide participants with the knowledge they need to manage their diabetes and avoid the long-term complications the disease can cause,” said Kay Leonhart, manager, diabetes education, Mercy Health Youngstown. They are offered throughout the year at three Mercy Health Youngstown locations: St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, St. Joseph Warren Hospital and Hospice House.

Genetic Testing topic at meeting

YOUNGSTOWN – Jennifer Stein, a genetic counselor at Akron Children’s Hospital, will discuss “Cancer and Genetic Testing” during the next meeting of Joanie’s Sisters in Support Sorority. Tuition Mission scholarships offered

EAST LIVERPOOL -The Tuition Mission Foundation, which has been serving needy college-bound students in the area since 1962, will applications for the 2015-16 academic year beginning Feb. 15. The deadline is April 15.

Foundation Vice President Catherine S. Vodrey said, “We have substantially revamped the application so that it’s a single streamlined document, rather than three parts. It can be completed online in under an hour.”

Though it can be filled out online, the application must be printed and mailed, scanned and e-mailed, or hand-delivered to Tuition Mission.

The Awards Committee generally meets during the first week of May, and students are notified regarding their tuition awards about a month after that.

Tuition Mission accepts applications from students residing in seven districts in the tri-state area: Beaver Local, East Liverpool and Wellsville; Oak Glen in northern West Virginia; and Midland, South Side and Western Beaver in western Pennsylvania.

Applications are also accepted from students enrolled at non-traditional schools like East Liverpool’s Buckeye Online School for Success and American Spirit Academy; Midland’s Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School and Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School; and others. The only requirement is that applicants reside in the school districts served by the foundation. Kent State planning webcast

EAST LIVERPOOL – Kent State University at East Liverpool is hosting a live webcast on Feb. 12 in the Brown Room on the second floor of the Mary Patterson Building, 212 E. Fourth St.

The speaker is Lawrence D. Burns, Ph.D, former corporate vice president of Research and Development and Strategic Planning at General Motors.

The free event begins with a networking breakfast at 8 a.m. and is being held in conjunction with the Columbiana County Port Authority. The webcast will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Burns will speak via webcast across Ohio from a live presentation in Cincinnati. His topic is “Making Value: The Future of Manufacturing.” During his remarks, Burns will explain the importance of “making value,” not just “making things” for customers. He will recommend specific actions that small- to medium-sized manufacturers can consider to better prepare for the future of manufacturing.

CANFIELD – The Columbiana and Mahoning County Beekeepers Association plans to meet on Feb. 15 at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm on Columbiana-Canfield Road. A coverdish lunch begins at 1 p.m. followed by the business session at 2 p.m.

Salem Masons to offer breakfast buffet

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.
