Reading programs set at Leetonia Library

LEETONIA–Summer Reading starts on June 6 at the Leetonia Community Public Library for all ages. Teens and adults will get raffle tickets for gift cards when they return library books and magazines, one ticket per visit.

For children from preschool to sixth grade there will be weekly programs at the library at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Every child that comes will get a prize each week.

There will also be a weekly craft for children to make starting the week of June 12. The craft can be made anytime, any day except during the 1 p.m. programs on Tuesdays.

Reading logs will be kept at the desk– after four hours participants will receive a coupon for a Leetonia Dairy Queen ice cream cone; after eight hours, an “I (love) to read puppy” toy; and after 12 hours, a T-shirt.

Those children who participate will be invited to a special party on July 25 with food, fun, games and prizes.

Thank you breakfast planned at schools

BELOIT–Knox and Damascus elementary schools will host a thank you breakfast for all the volunteers who dedicated their time on a weekly basis reading with children or helped teachers in the classroom as part of the BRANCH reading program. The Knox Elementary breakfast will be held from 8:15 to 9 a.m. June 5 and at Damascus from 8:15 to 9 a.m. June 6.

Fish fry scheduled at Shrine Club June 6

NORTH LIMA– The Youngstown Shrine Club, 1735 W. South Range Road (state Route 165), will host its annual fish fry dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. June 4. The meal consists of fried fish, coleslaw, French fries, macaroni and cheese, rolls and a beverage. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased at the door. The event will also include a 50/50 drawing.

The Youngstown Shrine Club’s membership works to promote and provide support to the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in North America through donations and promotional events. Shriner Hospitals treat children who have orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Advanced care is provided in a family-centered environment that is focused on maximizing a child’s quality of life regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

Honey bee program set in Salem

SALEM–Learn more about honey bees and their value to nature when “The Life of a Honey Bee from Birth to Death” is the topic of the program to be presented by R. Bruce Zimmer from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 28 at Salem Public Library’s Quaker Room. The discussion will include information about the queen, drones and worker bees. Zimmer will bring an observation hive with live bees for viewing.

Zimmer is the president of the Columbiana Mahoning County Beekeepers Association. He has been a beekeeper for five years and has seven hives of his own. He is also a retired computer programmer and educator. He currently owns and operates a dog and cat boarding kennel.

Salem book group to meet June 27

SALEM–Salem Public Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet at 7 p.m. June 27 in the library’s Quaker Room to discuss “The Underground Girls of Kabul” written by Jenny Nordberg.

“The Underground Girls of Kabul” follows Afghan girls who live disguised as boys through childhood, only to be expected by adult age to transform into subordinate wives and mothers. Some bacha posh refuse to rescind their male freedom.

The book relates the story of female characters who have grown up as bacha posh. Azita, whose youngest daughter is chosen to pose as her only son, Zahra, who resists her parents’ attempts to turn her into a woman; Shukria, who was forced to marry and have three children after living twenty years as a man; and Shahed, a special forces soldier, still in disguise as an adult man. “The Underground Girls of Kabul” investigates the hidden practice of bacha posh that has affected generations.

Quakertown Super Kids Race to be held June 3

SALEM–Quakertown Super Kids Race, a soap box derby for challenged children, will be held at 8:30 a.m. June 3 on South Broadway Avenue in front of city hall. The event is free and open to the public. There will be a concession stand sponsored by the Faithful Hearts group from the First United Methodist Church.

Hanover Homecoming Committee to meet Juen 5

Columbiana Family Care Center relocates to TownCenter

COLUMBIANA — The Columbiana Family Care Center (CFCC) has announced the relocation of its office at 750 East Park Avenue to the TownCenter at Firestone Farms, 116 Carriage Drive, Columbiana; effective Tuesday, May 30. CFCC is the practice of Board certified Family Medicine physician Vidya J.
