MS Services Assoc. to hold Super Walk

LISBON — The Multiple Sclerosis Services Association’s 27th annual Multiple Sclerosis Super Walk begins at 10 a.m. Sept. 29 at 232 S. Market St., Lisbon. Registration starts at 9 a.m.

to hold gathering

SALEM — Anyone related to the Weingart family is invited to meet with Weingart Cousins for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at Adele’s Place.

Music Study Club to open season

SALEM — The first meeting of the 2018-19 season of the Salem Music Study Club begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Regular meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month from September through May at 7 p.m. in the parlor in the Educational Building of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 251 S. Broadway Ave., unless otherwise noted. There will be a short business meeting and the program, “Favorite Piano Pieces.” Refreshments follow and guests are welcome. Anyone interested in joining the Salem Music Study Club is asked to contact Anna Anderson at 234-567-5207. Members of the club are performers and non-performers who enjoy music. The club was organized in 1924 and is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs.

Christina House breakfast planned

LISBON — The Christina House Domestic Violence Program’s Purple Door Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at St. George Hall, 271 W. Chestnut St. The breakfast is the kickoff for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Registration begins at 8 a.m. All members of the community are invited to this event to show their support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. This year’s theme is “Hope Behind the Purple Door.” Statistics reveal that each day in Ohio approximately 1,000 persons are living in domestic violence shelters. In one year over 100 Ohioans are killed in domestic violence-related incidents.

The breakfast is co-sponsored by Ozer Ministries and the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services. There is no cost to attend the breakfast, however reservations are appreciated by Oct. 2 by calling 330-420-0845.

United FFA

holds meeting

HANOVERTON — United Future Farmers of America (FFA) met on Sept. 10 with 27 chapter members in attendance. Officers gave monthly reports on the past month’s topics and activities. The chapter discussed getting FFA T-shirts. Members decided that the senior class would be choosing the shirt design through the FFA catalog. In addition, the chapter decided to sponsor a United T-ball team this coming spring. Members voted to decide on the Program of Activities cover. Each class will vote on the cover during class instead of at the October meeting. Members chose Blue Freedom to provide the fruit for the annual fruit sale.

TOPS 777 learns about metabolism

SALEM — Twila Shoaff presented a program titled “My Metabolism is Slowing Down” at the July 25 meeting of TOPS Chapter 777. She also offered the inspiration, “You’re Ready for More.”

Weekly winners were Gladys Landsberger, best loser; and Shoaff, Linda Gerace and Linda Straub, KOPS.

Monthly winners included Shirley Johns and Gerace, KOPS at goal or below; Linda Evanoff, runner-up best loser; Landsberger, runner up best loser; Pat Sheen, trooper award; Johns, KOPS; and Carrie Toy, special award.

St. Ann Parish card party set Oct. 21

SEBRING — The public is invited to the fall card party from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 at St. Ann Parish Hall, 323 S. 15th St. Admission is $5. WB Lady Ruritans hear about adult protection services

NORTH GEORGETOWN — The West Branch Area Ladies Ruritan Club met on Sept. 17 at the First Brethren Church in North Georgetown. Shirley Logsdon introduced the speaker, Patty Brown from the Columbiana County Adult Protective Services. She said if you ever have a concern about an elderly person call about abuse, neglect or exploitation and they will check within 24 hours and investigate. Sandy Bates read the minutes from the last meeting and Mary Belle Metzgar gave the treasurer’s report. She announced that dues are due in October. At the Zone Six meeting, John Biery was chosen zone governor and Jason Pierce as lieutenant governor.

Upcoming events include the next board meeting on Oct. 8, the general meeting on Oct. 15 and the Christmas dinner at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Middle Sandy Presbyterian Church.

The group will choose a veteran to recognize in November. Vice President Leona Reichenbach agreed to be a director and suggested that Robin Meyer be chosen vice president. Members will vote for officers in October.

Evening R-Weigh recognizes winners

SALEM –Twenty-three members of R-Weigh Evening Group met on Sept. 17 at the First Friends Church. Those sharing “Me Bags” were Jessie Rea, Marion Doerr, Patty Pim, Linda Lude, Susan Cain, Janel Anderson and Judy Smith. The Can Do award will be $6 for next week. The Goalie Can Do award went to Lisa Smith. Calorie chart winners were Joan Schafer, Vicki Knizat, Gina Zepernick and Jennifer Stewart. Goalie calorie chart winners were Jessie Rea, Rita Cecil and Lisa Smith.

Honorable mention in Group One went to Patty Pim. Group Two winners were Jennifer Stewart, good loser; Chris Learn and Vicki Knizat, honorable mention; Rita Cecil, goalie good loser; and Ruth Miller, Rea and Nancy Stryffler, runners -up. Awards for losing weight four weeks in a row went to Marian Doerr and Judy Smith.

Peggy Kurtz offered the inspiration titled “There are no quick fixes for losing weight.” She said it takes change and self control. “Lose to Draw winners were Patty Hartman, Learn, Schafer, Judy Smith, Cecil, Knizat, Stewart, Zepernick and Nancy Stryffler.

The challenge for the week presented by Sara Smith was to eat only when hungry and use food for fuel not fun. Cecil’s challenge is to try to do 10 steps a day. Next week Judy Smith and Linda Lude will present the challenges. New members are welcome to meetings held from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays at the church. Weigh-ins are from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.

Winona Ruritans host family picnic

WINONA — The Winona Ruritan Club hosted its annual family picnic on Aug. 28 at the Winona Evangelical Friends Church. Members and their guests brought a variety of coverdish and desserts. The club furnished the roast beef, ham, rolls and beverages. Vice President Homer Althouse made a motion to dispense with the monthly treasurer and secretary reports. Buster Rogowsky seconded the motion which passed. Secretary Lee Stamp called the roll of members with 14 present. Members introduced their guests, totalling 11.

President Rob Doyle made a few announcements including the tickets and posters are ordered for the club’s pancake and sausage breakfast on Oct. 13 at Willow Grove Grange. Members are asked to post their yard signs on Oct. 7. Two volunteers are needed to serve on the nominating committee for officers and one board of director for 2019. The Ohio District’s fall convention is scheduled for Nov. 10 at the Christian Church on Beechwood Avenue in Alliance.

Pumpkin weigh-off planned Oct. 13

CANFIELD –Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will hold its 24th annual giant pumpkin weigh-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at Parks Garden Center, 9010 U.S. Route 62. Prize money this year will exceed $20,000 for the heaviest categories of giant pumpkin, watermelon, tomato and Halloween-type pumpkin. Also included are widest sunflower head and longest gourd. The heaviest giant pumpkin will receive the first-place prize of $5,000. Todd Skinner of Barnesville holds the current Ohio record of 2,150 pounds for his pumpkin.

Growers wishing to enter the competition must have their entry at Parks by 9 a.m. Oct. 13. Exhibits will remain on display until 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. A lunch stand will be available.
