United FFA member to sing Anthem at convention

HANOVERTON — United Future Farmers of America (FFA) is recognizing Megan Drake for being chosen to sing the National Anthem today at the Ohio Farm Bureau’s annual convention. The bureau picks one FFA member every year to sing the National Anthem at the convention. Megan is the daughter of Darlynne and Todd Drake. She is the United FFA president and has served as an officer for two years. She also has participated in the FFA state convention talent show and placed fourth and also made the top 15 at the FFA national convention talent show.

Public Employee Retirees to meet in Lisbon Monday

LISBON — Members of Public Employee Retirees Inc. # 59 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4111. The meeting follows at 1 p.m. featuring guest speaker Kevin Blenn.

United Band Holiday Concert Series scheduled

HANOVERTON — United Local Band Holiday Concert Series will be held on Dec. 9 and 19 at the high school. All concert bands grade five to 12 will perform on Dec. 9. The Fifth Grade and High School Concert Bands are performing at 2:30 p.m. The Sixth Grade and Junior High Bands are performing at 4 p.m. Both concerts are free to the public in the high school auditorium. The United Jazz Band and Flight Show Choir will host “Carols and Cocoa” at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 in the high school cafeteria. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens/students.

Dr. Cardboard to build stuff at Go Wild in the Park

SALEM — Dr. Cardboard will build stuff like sleds out of cardboard at the next Go Wild in the Park program at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. This program is provided by the Salem Parks and Recreation Department and the library. There is no cost to attend this family-friendly program that is open to the public. “Stitches in Time” to meet at Salem Library Dec. 19

SALEM — The “Stitches in Time” group plans to meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 19 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. Advance registration is not necessary. For more information call 330-332-0042.

Introduction to Facebook offered in January at library

SALEM — The class, Introduction to Facebook, begins at 2 p.m. Jan. 3 in the Salem Public Library’s Quaker Meeting Room. Technology instructor Kathy Bennett will provide step-by-step instruction of the basics of Facebook use. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop computer or tablet in order to save classroom work if possible as the number of library devices may be limited.

This program for adults is open to the public and free of cost to attend. Registration is required at salem.lib.oh.us or 330-332-0042. The class is provided through a Guiding Ohio Online grant provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the State Library of Ohio.

Drive-thru chicken dinner set in North Lima

NORTH LIMA — A drive-thru chicken dinner will be served from 3 to 6 p.m. or until sold out Dec. 13 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 12062 South Ave. The meal includes a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a brownie. To reserve dinners call 330-549-2588.

Salem Board of Education to meet Monday

SALEM — The Salem Board of Education’s special board meeting begins at 6 p.m. Monday in the Salem High School library to review board goals.

The regular meeting follows at 7 p.m. in the library.

The board of education will go into executive session for the purpose of the employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion, or compensation of an employee or official, or the investigation of charges against an employee or official or regulated individual unless the employee, official, or regulated individual requests a public hearing. No action will be taken.

Dinner at West Branch to aid district family

BELOIT–West Branch Local Schools are raising money for a local woman’s family after she unexpectedly died.

The Tami Jones Memorial Benefit Dinner is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the West Branch High School cafeteria. Tami Jones was the mother of Damascus Elementary School student Susan Jones and her younger brother Michael. She died from a cerebral aneurysm in October at only 37 years old. All the money raised will be donated to Tami Jones’ family.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 3 to 10 and free for children under 3. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Spaghetti and meatballs, salad, applesauce, bread, dessert and a beverage will be served. A Chinese auction and raffle items will also be available.

Donations are welcomed. Checks can be made payable to Damascus Elementary PIE. Any mailed donations can be sent to Damascus Elementary c/o Marissa Bryant, 14405 Pricetown Road, Salem OH 44460.

Adele’s Queen of Hearts jackpot set at $50K

SALEM — The Queen of Hearts drawing at Adele’s Place stands at $50,469 going into today’s drawing. The weekly drawings were moved to a once-a-month format for the winter months. The winner must be present to collect the entire amount and if not present will receive half the awarded amount if the Queen of Hearts is selected. There is also a 50/50 drawing and the winner does not have to be present to collect the money. Adele’s Place is located at 509 Snyder Road. The next drawing will be on Jan. 3.
